Children aren't ready for some books

Thank you to Debra J. Saunders for her clear, well-written essay on use of the book "Sex is a Funny Word" in schools.

Kids are exposed way too early to the books Ms. Saunders writes about. There are good reasons to let the dormant period play out.

When kids have questions about their bodies, it really helps to have a parent on hand to answer. Briefly. They often aren't ready for any lengthy explanation.

Parents who really know their children will understand when they are ready for more and will provide it. A lot depends on the relationship that has been developing between parent and child.

The title, "Sex is a Funny Word," implies there's something joke-worthy in the book.
