Congressman is no collaborator
The endorsement of Peter Roskam by the Daily Herald paints him as a "collaborative lawmaker" who acts as "a check on the president's more troubling impulses." That is the illusion that Roskam has nurtured, but it is far from the truth.
Roskam voted with Trump 94 percent of the time. As the central architect of the tax bill, Roskam threw his constituents under the bus by imposing a $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, and depriving middle-class taxpayers of meaningful tax relief. That bill and subsequent spending bills added $3 trillion to the national debt. Now, ominously, the very debt that he helped create has been used as an excuse to make significant cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Roskam is a fiscal opportunist, not a fiscal conservative.
In the face of unparalleled corruption and malfeasance in the Trump administration, Roskam has remained totally silent despite numerous indictments and allegations of criminal behavior. Not once has Roskam called for hearings or investigations; but of greatest concern is his unwillingness to challenge the radicals in his party who are undermining the Mueller investigation on a daily basis.
Roskam voted numerous times to repeal Obamacare, but supported Trumpcare that would have taken health insurance away from 24,000,000 people and increased premiums by 20 percent. Now that he is in a tight race, he has miraculously decided that Obamacare needs to be reformed. Don't believe it.
Roskam is inaccessible to his constituents, especially those who disagree with him. No open town hall meetings in a decade, and a history of "running away" from those with opposing ideas. It is time to replace Peter Roskam.
Democrat Sean Casten is a competent and moderate voice to represent the 6th District. Please vote for him on Nov. 6.
