Arlington VFW Post 981 Marks Memorial Day

Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 981 held a Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 30 at the Wheeling AMVETS on McHenry Road in Wheeling.

Commander Matt Voss began with an opening prayer. In his following remarks about Memorial Day he reminded us that we are honoring and remembering those who answered the nation's call and willingly laid down their life for our freedom.

Addressing the veterans in attendance he said, "some of us are here today to honor their fallen comrades & friends. Rather than paying homage to heroes and icons we are here to reflect on the fallen who were people just like us - fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters and friends."

He concluded by asking us "not to accept feelings of grief but rather maintain the feeling of honor, patriotism, and pride."

The Post 981 Color Guard lead by Dale Berg rendered a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of taps. Commander Voss concluded the ceremony with a closing benediction.
