American Legion Post displays giant U.S. flag over Fourth weekend
American Legion Post 690 displayed a 30-by-15-foot American flag that was donated by Palatine resident Ed Murnane, which was last used in the 1980 presidential election by Ronald Reagan at a fundraiser in Bensenville.
The flag was displayed in front of the American Legion, behind the renovated canon, over the Fourth of July weekend.
"I've been a Palatine resident through most of my adult life, worked for the Daily Herald and worked in the White House with Reagan and then with President H.W. Bush," said Murnane. "I've always thought of Palatine as home, so I wanted to donate the flag to an organization in the community."
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919, as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation's largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
The Palatine Chapter holds its monthly general meeting at 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at the American Legion Hall, 122 W. Palatine Road, Palatine.
