Widescreen: Disney hosts its own nerdy Super Bowl of sorts this weekend

Disney will do its darnedest to steal the social media spotlight from the NFL this weekend as the D23 Expo lands in Anaheim. The biennial convention celebrating all things Mouse is expected to be a hotbed of movie announcements, theme park news and viral trailers, beginning Friday, Sept. 9, with a presentation from the company's film studios.

Will we learn the title of next July's "Indiana Jones" movie? Will a trailer premiere online? Those are good bets, especially since John Williams has already debuted a piece of music from the film - the legendary composer conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a performance of "Helena's Theme," named for a new character played by "Fleabag" star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this past weekend at the Hollywood Bowl. Check out the video at the Laughing Place channel on YouTube.

Other safe bets: the formal announcement of Marvel's "Fantastic Four" reboot, with "WandaVision's" Matt Shakman directing; trailers for 2023's third season of "The Mandalorian" and the Rosario Dawson spinoff, "Ahsoka"; our first look at Amy Adams in "Disenchanted," coming to Disney+ this Thanksgiving; and a peek at next year's new "Haunted Mansion" movie starring Lakeith Stanfield and Owen Wilson.

(This writer's pie-in-the-sky hope: The resurrection of "TRON: Ascension," which was canceled in 2015 even though preproduction and location scouting had already begun. Since then, director Joe Kosinski made a little movie called "Top Gun: Maverick.")

The studios panel won't be livestreamed, but expect plenty of footage from it to show up all over social media. The rest of the weekend's programming will be officially available on Disney's YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts. See the full schedule at d23.com.
