Error leads to one-time tax hike for Gurnee library district
An administrative error by the Warren-Newport Public Library District in Gurnee will result in a temporary tax increase for residents, officials said.
The owner of a home with a market value of $250,000 will see a one-time increase of $39 for bond retirement. It will be $66 for the owner of a $400,000 home.
"We made a mistake," library Executive Director Ryan Livergood said. "We apologize to our taxpayers and are currently taking steps to ensure this is a one-time error. I personally regret that it happened, and it serves to remind us that, as humans, we are not perfect."
Officials said the district hopes to make up for the error by requesting less in next year's levy.
The library covers Warren and Newport townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa, Libertyville and Waukegan.
