Geneva kids return to school, including mobile classrooms

School began Wednesday at Geneva School District 304's six elementary schools, two middle schools and high school.

Over at Geneva High School, some students were getting used to taking classes in mobile units the district set up over the summer.

The six classrooms sit on the blacktop that was part of the playground for the former Coultrap Elementary School, which was south of the high school. Coultrap was torn down in 2013.

The high school wanted more classroom space in part because it is offering more courses, to meet state-mandated requirements.

A space study showed that, while some spaces in the building are underused, converting them to regular classrooms wasn't a good solution. Those rooms are designed for specific programs, such as home economics, science laboratories, music rooms, gymnasiums and computer laboratories.

The district also expects enrollment to start increasing, as home construction in the district has resumed.
