Letter: Heartbreaking decision
Downers Grove Public Library's decision to cancel the planned events for National Coming Out Day have left me inarticulate.
I can't come up with words strong enough to convey my anger with Awake Illinois for fomenting an unsafe atmosphere that left DGPL with no safe alternative to cancellation. Words with conviction enough to express my level of certainty that continuing with the event would have led to an emotionally, if not physically, violent atmosphere do not exist.
I can't come up with words sad enough to share my disappointment that the most small-minded among us have won the day here. Because of their actions, young people struggling with self-identity will not have the safe and welcoming atmosphere they need and deserve.
Also inadequate are words to voice my support for the DGPL and others who strive to create secure and inclusive places for all people.
Finally, my 300-word limit here is not enough to share my love and support for all who struggle with the fear and anxiety of coming out and my fervent hope that they find both internal and external acceptance.
