Scammer steals $10,000 from Des Plaines woman's bank account

A Des Plaines woman lost about $10,000 to a scammer posing as an online bank employee, police said.

The theft occurred Friday morning, Des Plaines police said. The scammer called the 62-year-old woman and asked to verify her account information.

The woman didn't give up any information and called the bank, police said. A real employee informed her the caller wasn't legitimate and that someone had transferred money from her account without authorization.

She reported the crime to police that night.
