Parents have key role in kids' exercise

I wish to comment on a letter published in the Elgin edition of Your Views Nov. 30. Mr. Luis Angel Dominguez wants Kane County schools to do a better job teaching physical education, including longer classes and mandatory participation. He worries that students lack exercise and wants schools to do more because for some, "this is the only exercise they get for the day."

Although I agree that PE is important and can provide great opportunities for students to try a new sport or activity, I feel that parents have a much more important role in teaching their children how to be active. Not even the best PE class will do much good for students who spend all the rest of their time sitting.

Parents should take time to keep their children active outside of school. Young children love to run, kick or throw a ball. Older kids like to visit the playground or play soccer in the yard. Families can take a walk together outside or at the mall. If spending the day at home, put on music and dance or work with the kids to clean the house energetically.

Parents miss a teaching opportunity when they drive their child a few blocks to the bus stop and sit there with the engine idling till the bus arrives. Also, parents practice a form of neglect when they hand their child an electronic device to keep them out of the way.

Parents, you can help your children to develop a healthy, active lifestyle. Walk to the bus stop. Plan some fun family activities. Assign and supervise chores. Put down your electronic devices for a while and have fun together.
