Sound check: Marina City's evolution, show at Chop Shop

‘Addicted' to Marina City

For a while now, Plainfield power-pop sextet Marina City has been secretly cultivating something new, rolling out bits and pieces of the next step in the band's evolution at various appearances and the recent release of the single “Addicted.” Catch it in all its glory when the band headlines Chicago's Chop Shop this weekend, with support from eclectic popster Emily Blue and danceable tunes from West suburban indie-pop band The Weekend Run Club. 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Chop Shop, 2033 W. North Ave., Chicago. $10-$15. (773) 537-4440 or chopshopchi.com.

The Lettermen's classics

Today I learned that one of my favorite classics, “The Way You Look Tonight,” was originally written by The Lettermen, a pop vocal trio that bounded to fame in the '60s with tight harmony structures and follow-up hits “When I Fall in Love,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off You,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” as well as others. The band's current incarnation brings its enduring classics to Arlington Heights for two performances at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights. $40-$45. (847) 577-2121 or metropolisarts.com.

Ike Reilly's tunes and tales

Contemporary folk rocker Ike Reilly's catalog comes almost entirely from his powerful storytelling abilities. And like so many other great storytellers, he puts his into song. Spend a cozy night with the Libertyville native as he shares stories from his solid musical career and his gritty, punk-influenced songs, both of which will make you laugh, make you think and wow you with his talent. 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro, 3905 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. $20. (773) 248-3905 or irishbistro.com.
