Hoffman Estates celebrates Black History Month

Hoffman Estates' Cultural Awareness Committee will celebrate Black History Month with an event featuring a musical performance by singer-songwriter Char at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the village hall, 1900 Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates.

Born in Jamaica, Char's name translates as "singer, song, delight." Her music derives from a variety of influences, including gospel, pop, R&B, jazz and classical.

Light refreshments also will be served during the event.

Though attendance is free, reservations are required and can be made by calling Sue at (847) 781-2606.

Black History Month was created in 1976 as an extension of a weeklong observance started by scholar and historian Carter G. Woodson in 1976. February is when Black History Month takes place in commemoration of the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and intellectual, abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.
