Police: Man broke into vehicles and stole handguns

A 19-year-old Wadsworth man has been charged with breaking into two vehicles and stealing handguns.

Jacob T. Newton, of the 39600 block of North Delany Road, is charged with two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of possession of a firearm without a FOID card, authorities said.

Two Wadsworth homeowners called police July 31 saying their vehicles were burglarized while parked in driveways on the 14000 block of West August Zupec Drive.

In both cases, authorities said, a handgun was one of the items taken from the vehicles.

One homeowner had video of the burglary. The video was circulated on social media, and several leads were generated within a day.

Police said they spoke with Newton at his home Wednesday and he was taken to the sheriff's office. Charges were filed after talking with him and recovering the firearms, police said.

Newton, free on $5,000 bond, returns to court Aug. 9.
