Letter: Fight misinformation with powerful weapon
Yes, we have freedom of speech, a First Amendment guarantee that by the way means freedom from federal prosecution for said speech and not freedom from consequences, especially if you are privately employed.
However, tons of misinformation makes the rounds, all designed to mislead, to anger, to frighten people to lean for political agendas. Here the truth does not matter. It's all about gaining influence.
For example, how much misinformation is there about COVID and the vaccine? It's a staggering amount, and how many people have suffered and died because they were cajoled into believing it? Thousands to be sure, probably tens of thousands.
There are too many cases to list, but the point is that this will go on and on until those responsible face the consequences of such horrid misinformation. Until then, they, the keyboard warriors, will be at full throttle.
The sad part is there is no mechanism in place, no laws to make such people and platforms be brought to task for the harm that is being done to our society and our country.
You want to stop this? Here's my idea. Find a way to hit them where it hurts. Sue them. Hit them in the wallet. A pharmacist friend of mine noted that when a COVID vaccine was made necessary for employment, so many people came in droves to get theirs. So much for ideological zeal.
Find a way to do this and the sidewalks will be crowded.
