Firefighters rescue three dozen cats from Lombard shelter fire Sunday

Lombard firefighters rescued 36 cats Sunday night from a fire at a home being used as an animal shelter, authorities said.

According to a news release from the village, the Lombard Fire Department responded at about 8:20 p.m. to the 900 block of East St. Charles Road for a structure fire at a single-family home. The house was being used as a shelter for stray and homeless cats.

Firefighters found flames on the east side of the building and smoke coming from the eaves. Multiple hose lines were deployed to extinguish the fire while crews entered the rear of the building to rescue the cats. The fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes.

According to Cat Guardians volunteers, 38 cats were being cared for at the facility. Firefighters rescued 36 cats, all of which authorities say appeared to be in good condition.

The remaining two cats are believed to have escaped the building during rescue efforts. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
