IHSA soccer official injured by water bottle after game played at Glenbard South
An IHSA soccer official was assaulted Friday as she left the field at Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn.
Hanah Shehaiber and other officials were leaving the field after officiating a boys soccer Class 2A sectional final at Glenbard South. No. 7 Glenbard South upset top-seeded Juarez 3-1.
At the conclusion of the game, Glenbard South athletic director Tim Carlson was escorting the officials from the field to a staging area near the concession stand.
On a video that has been on Twitter and YouTube, a Juarez supporter is seen throwing a full water bottle at the officials. The bottle struck Shehaiber in her back, injuring her.
Shehaiber, who has refereed multiple state finals, said she then contacted the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department and filed a report on the incident.
Mike Moore, president of the United Suburban Soccer Officials Association, condemned the incident.
“USSOA completely condemns the throwing of a hard case water bottle at one of its members in the Glenbard South sectional final,” Moore said after seeing the video. “It was unprovoked, unsportsmanlike and was a downright assault. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated at all. It is actions like this that keep people from becoming referees nationwide.”
Carlson said the incident did not involve anyone from Glenbard South, just Juarez players and fans.
“It's an unfortunate way for the game to end,” Carlson said. “Those types of things shouldn't happen, but unfortunately it did.”
