Chicago White Sox to hire Matt Roffe from Milwaukee Brewers to fill amateur scouting director role

Offseason activities are underway for the Chicago White Sox, who are expected to hire Matt Roffe to fill their amateur scouting director opening, a source confirmed Thursday.

Roffe most recently worked for the newly crowned World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers as the assistant director of domestic scouting.

His exact title with the Sox is to be determined.

The Athletic’s Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal originally reported the hiring Thursday.

The Sox have had the opening since early September, when amateur scouting director Mike Shirley resigned. The Athletic reported at the time that the resignation came after an internal investigation into allegations of verbal harassment.

Roffe will lead the domestic draft duties for the Sox, who have seen the draft be an avenue of impact in recent years. First-round picks Colson Montgomery (2021), Noah Schultz (2022) and Hagen Smith (2024) — and Jacob Gonzalez (2023) before he was traded— were among those contributing to this year’s playoff team.

Roster moves

Pitchers Erick Fedde, Sean Newcomb and Trevor Richards, outfielders Tommy Pham and Randal Grichuk and catcher Jake Rogers elected free agency.

The Sox reinstated infielder/outfielders Brooks Baldwin and Tanner Murray and pitchers Prelander Berroa, Ky Bush, Jordan Leasure and Mike Vasil from the 60-day injured list. Their 40-man roster remains at 40.
