Dundee Township Lions Club to host Veterans Day tribute Nov. 8

The Dundee Township Lions Club invites residents throughout the Fox River Valley and surrounding communities to join together for a special Veterans Day tribute on Sunday, Nov. 8, from noon to 4 p.m. at Grafelman Park, 112 N. Fifth St. in West Dundee. This patriotic community celebration is free and open to the public.

The event will honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families, and celebrate the American flag as an enduring symbol of our nation's freedom, unity, and heritage.

The afternoon will feature a patriotic program including introductory remarks, prayer, and the singing of the national anthem.

Among the organizations and participants expected to take part are: the American Legion, Honor Flight Chicago, Dundee Scottish Pipe Band, True Patriots Care, first responders and their families, emergency services personnel, East Dundee Fire Department, and the West Dundee fire and police departments.

A particularly impressive feature of the celebration will be an extensive display of American flags presented by Jerry Christopherson, president of True Patriots Care, a patriotic organization whose beginnings date back to the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The display will provide a powerful visual tribute to our nation's veterans and the American flag, reminding visitors of the unity, resilience, and patriotism that brought Americans together following Sept. 11.

Visitors also will have the opportunity to view World War I and World War II re-enactments as well as fire trucks, police vehicles, and emergency response equipment.

One of the day's especially moving tributes will be the playing of Echo Taps, a solemn musical remembrance honoring those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.

Local historian, author, and Dundee Township Lions Club president Philip A. Aleo will deliver a special Veterans Day address at 12:30 p.m. reflecting upon the origins and significance of the holiday, the extraordinary contributions of America’s veterans, and the importance of honoring and respecting the American flag.

“This is an opportunity for our community to come together, not simply to remember our veterans, but to express our heartfelt gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy because of their service and sacrifice,” Aleo said.

The event is intended to bring together veterans, military families, local officials, first responders, and residents of all ages in a shared expression of patriotism and appreciation.

Families are especially encouraged to attend and introduce younger generations to the importance of Veterans Day and the meaning of service to our country.

The Lions also will be offering free vision and hearing screenings for all ages from 1 to 4 p.m. at the nearby Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 401 W. Main St.

The Dundee Township Lions Club welcomes the entire community to join in this special tribute to America’s veterans and to the flag under which they served.
