Freight train heist causes long delays for Metra riders

A reported robbery on a BNSF Railway freight train in Chicago delayed hundreds of Metra commuters Tuesday morning.

Metra trains were stopped on the BNSF Line from 8:48 a.m. until 10:35 a.m., spokesperson Meg Thomas-Reile said.

The disruption delayed at least 10 commuter trains, and the agency is “still working through residual delays from the incident,” she noted.

BNSF and Chicago police both responded to the crime scene, near the Western Avenue station. No one was harmed, officials said.

BNSF is the commuter railroad’s busiest line, running from Aurora to Union Station in Chicago.

Chicago police officials referred questions to the freight railroad. The Daily Herald has reached out to BNSF for comment.
