Endorsement: Crespo for Illinois House District 44
For some politicians getting kicked out of the party’s caucus and stripped of committee chairmanships would be a serious red flag at the ballot box. For Democrat Fred Crespo, seeking reelection to an 11th term in the Illinois House of Representatives, it’s a signal virtue.
House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch exiled the 44th District representative from Hoffman Estates in the spring of 2025. Crespo’s sin? He dared prepare ideas for a state budget without the speaker’s blessing.
It was hardly an act of rebellion, but it did reflect two important qualities of Crespo’s — independence and a taxpayer-focused approach to government spending. These qualities, in addition to a thoughtfully moderate political mindset overall, have made Crespo an effective representative for the district for 10 terms, and they continue to define him in his pursuit of the 11th.
“Illinois needs to control spending, eliminate waste and duplication, and identify savings before considering new taxes or fees,” he says flatly in his Daily Herald questionnaire while emphasizing an important role the state can play both in meeting its commitments to school funding and helping reduce property tax burdens.
He also has typically nuanced yet outspoken views on immigration policy, education and criminal justice, and as he looks to the future, he recognizes the need for decisive action at the state level to manage the proliferation of data processing centers.
He is challenged by a surprisingly competitive newcomer in Republican Ralph A. Black of Hanover Park. A businessman with long and diverse experience, Black said he had not considered seeking public office until someone approached him and urged him to run. We can see why. From immigration to crime to the Chicago Bears stadium controversy, he offers well-reasoned analysis and platforms. Plus, he suggests a sincere bent toward collaborative leadership.
He would make an excellent lawmaker or leader in other elected offices. If he doesn’t win the 44th District House seat, we hope to see him in future races.
But for this seat, the district has a proven champion for taxpayers who is willing to speak truth to power in a powerful party that needs to hear it. Fred Crespo is endorsed.
