Endorsement: Schneider for Congress from Illinois District 10

Even if it were a competitive race, incumbent Brad Schneider would present a formidable candidacy for Congress from Illinois’ 10th District.

Over the course of six terms, the Highland Park Democrat has been a steady, hard-working centrist force throughout his two tenures in Washington, and repeatedly turns up at or near the top of surveys identifying the most bipartisan representatives in the House.

Don’t let that label deceive you into thinking he is soft on traditional Democratic values. Indeed, he consistently describes himself as a “proud Democrat,” and demonstrates it with his positions ranging from health care to abortion rights to tariffs and congressional independence.

“Effective government does not require abandoning our principles,” he says in one of his answers on the Daily Herald questionnaire. “It requires willingness to find common ground where it exists and the courage to stand firm where it does not.”

In that spirit, he has stood up for Social Security fairness and against Medicaid cuts. He advocates for throughtful policies to strengthen the nation’s health care system. He is outspoken about the need for Congress to reassert its control over the nation’s purse strings.

District 10 covers a broad swath of Lake County, stretching as far north as the state line at Hebron east to Lake Michigan and southeast into Wheeling, Northbrook and Wilmette in Cook County.

Schneider’s challenger is 93-year-old Highland Park Republican Carl Lambrecht, who has not mounted much of a spirited challenge. The incumbent is the clear choice to continue representing the 10th District.
