Let's have civility in our elections

A September letter in the Daily Herald talked about the stealing of political yard signs in Barrington, namely signs for state Senate candidate Nabeela Syed. This is theft, and totally unacceptable.

In previous elections, I have had yard signs stolen from my yard and discarded. I'm an independent voter, and my yard has displayed both Democratic and Republican candidate signs. The signs for Republican candidates were stolen and thrown into the street. Also, a pumpkin was smashed against the side of my home after my signs were taken.

So, it's not only Democrats who get their signs stolen. I don't place any more signs in my yard; this right has been taken away from me.

Another letter to the editor in September called for a constitutional amendment to restore the ability of Congress and the states to set reasonable limits on money in elections. I agree with this; otherwise, only rich or richly funded candidates are shaping our future.

Let's make this amendment a reality and vote for the candidates who promise to address this issue if elected. With voting season upon us, remember that fairness and civility to all parties are the American way.

Stealing political yard signs diminishes part of our electoral process. Let's make this a fair and thoughtful election for both political parties. Instead of childish pranks, let's think about the seriousness and consequences of voting. Vote for candidates who uphold the American way initiated by our forefathers.
