Daily Herald Week 9 high school football previews

Hersey (8-0, 4-0) at Prospect (8-0, 4-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Hersey 48, Rolling Meadows 0; Prospect 49, Buffalo Grove 14

Last year: Hersey 38, Prospect 34

Outlook: This is the game that everyone has waited for in the Mid-Suburban League. The game has decided the East champion for the last six seasons with the teams splitting those meetings. Both teams have been incredible on both sides of the ball. Kentucky commit Jake Nawrot, who has completed 70% (122 of 174) of his passes for 1,864 yards and 27 touchdowns, leads a Hersey offense that is averaging 42 points per game. Jackson Travis has rushed for 13 touchdowns and 798 yards. Prospect is led by Eastern Illinois commit Jackson Cacini, who has completed 73% (108 of 148) of his passes for 1,636 yards and 15 touchdowns. Cacini has rushed for eight touchdowns and 218 yards for a Prospect team averaging 45.5 points. Matthew Donnelly has 1,001 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, Hersey has allowed just eight points per game while Prospect has allowed just under 10 points per game.

Fremd (5-3, 2-2) at Palatine (4-4, 2-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Barrington 27, Fremd 25; Palatine 16, Hoffman Estates 7

Last year: Fremd 23, Palatine 13

Outlook: This is the 59th meeting of the “Battle of the Tracks.” Fremd leads the series 33-25 after the Vikings broke a five-game losing streak to the Pirates last year. Regarding losing streaks, Fremd has lost two in a row this season to Hoffman Estates and Barrington by a total of three points. Fremd quarterback Will Clark nearly brought the Vikings back from a 24-0 deficit by running for two touchdowns and throwing for two others last week. Palatine has rallied to win its last two games thanks to an offense that is beginning to find itself. Pirates quarterback Brandon Martino has played very well in those wins, throwing for nearly 300 yards while completing 58% of his passes. Palatine has also received an improvement in its running game behind Chase Klipowicz, Jayden Evans and Josiah Carrillo.

Glenbrook South (5-3, 2-0) at Maine South (7-1, 2-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: New Trier 35, Glenbrook South 28; Maine South 51, Evanston 13

Last year: Maine South 38, Glenbrook South 7

Outlook: Maine South can wrap up the newly revamped CSL South football division with a perfect record. Maine South comes into this game with its starters playing just a half or less in the Hawks’ last four games due to lopsided scores. Those blowouts have happened six times this year for the Hawks. Jameson Purcell and the rest of the offense continue to shine despite their lack of time on the playing field. The first team Maine South defense has also been superb, allowing just two field goals last week. Glenbrook South’s three losses have come to York, Fremd and New Trier.

Schaumburg (1-7, 0-4) at Barrington (4-4, 4-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Conant 44, Schaumburg 24; Barrington 27, Fremd 25

Last year: Barrington 42, Schaumburg 0

Outlook: After being blanked three weeks ago, Schaumburg’s offense has found itself, averaging nearly 29 points per game the last two weeks. Unfortunately, the defense has not been up to par, allowing 53 points in that same span. Barrington just keeps finding ways to get things done after their 0-4 start. The Broncos were on the verge of defeat last week but put together a long scoring drive and a last-second field goal. Lamar Osterhues, who was injured earlier in the season, is rolling into form, rushing for 855 yards and eight touchdowns.

Conant (6-2, 2-2) at Hoffman Estates (4-4, 2-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Conant 44, Schaumburg 24; Palatine 16, Hoffman Estates 7

Last year: Hoffman Estates 28, Conant 14

Outlook: The annual Hoffman Estates Mayor’s Cup battle has been one-sided for the past six years with the Hawks winning each meeting. Conant comes into this game with some momentum after the Cougars got their offense back in gear with a 44-point outburst thanks to 429 rushing yards last week. Jackson Spizzirri is coming off a terrific game running for 227 yards on 29 carries with five touchdowns along with a trio of two-point conversions. After winning two in a row, Hoffman stumbled last week vs. Palatine. The Hawks will be looking to get their ground game back in gear behind Riley Lennert and Braylin Scales. QB Shion Dailey has also stepped up throwing a touchdown pass the last two weeks.

Rolling Meadows (2-6, 1-3) at Elk Grove (3-5, 1-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Hersey 48, Rolling Meadows 0; Elk Grove 42, Wheeling 7

Last year: Rolling Meadows 48, Elk Grove 0

Outlook: Rolling Meadows needs a victory to ensure a spot in the playoffs. A loss would leave them with two wins, and they currently have 38 playoff points, so most likely they would not qualify. The Mustangs have had trouble the past two weeks running the football and need to regain that form. Elk Grove got to three wins last week behind Luke Maher throwing for three touchdowns and 187 yards.

Wheeling (0-8, 0-4) at Buffalo Grove (5-3, 2-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Elk Grove 42, Wheeling 7; Prospect 49, Buffalo Grove 14

Last year: Buffalo Grove 45, Wheeling 14

Outlook: After some difficulties this season due to injuries, Wheeling will complete the season on the football field. The Wildcats have worked especially hard all year and will look to end the year on a high note. Their main goal will be attempting to slow down Buffalo Grove running back Matthew Kaput, who has 1,114 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Bison have also got strong play from Kaput on defense along with Drew Carrison, Alex Glenn, David Graham and Charlie Vates. Buffalo Grove is looking for a better seed in the playoffs after qualifying for the first time in three seasons.

Maine West (2-6, 1-1) at Vernon Hills (2-6, 1-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Maine West 20, Niles West 0; Deerfield 30, Vernon Hills 8

Last year: Vernon Hills 14, Maine West 7

Outlook: The winner qualifies for the playoffs while the loser will need some help at 2-7. Both teams have their wins over Maine East and Niles West but have not faired well against other opponents. Maine West is coming off its best game of the season. The Warriors pitched a shutout last week and allowed just 22 rushing yards. Zaire Domino, Eddie Arroyo and Davion Tate have spearheaded the Maine West offense. Vernon Hills has lost two in a row. The Cougars are led on offense by the passing and running of Colin McMurray while Liam Wozniak has been a solid two-way player. Wozniak, along with Andrew Grossnickle, Mikey Lewis, Jonathan Keats, Cade Albrecht and Carson Alper have been stalwarts on the defensive side.

Leyden (3-5, 2-3) at Hinsdale South (4-4, 4-1)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Downers Grove South 17, Leyden 6; Hinsdale South 47, Morton 14

Last year: Leyden 21, Hinsdale South 19

Outlook: Leyden is already playoff bound. Now the Eagles can help themselves to a better seed with a win. Leyden broke a four-game losing streak against the Hornets last year. This season the Eagles have leaned heavily on quarterback Sonny Falco who threw a touchdown pass last week. Nehemiah Almodovar, Juan Vega and Armani Santana have been keys to the Leyden offense. Hinsdale South broke a two-game losing streak last week in its win over Morton.

Niles North (5-3, 1-0) at Maine East (0-8, 0-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Highland Park 40, Niles North 35; Glenbrook North 42, Maine East 7

Last year: Niles North 51, Maine East 6

Outlook: Junior Favour Lewis stepped up for the Demons last week with a touchdown, 74 yards rushing and seven tackles on defense.

St. Viator (1-7, 1-1) at De La Salle (0-8, 0-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Fenwick 55, St. Viator 6; Carmel 42, De La Salle 0

Last year: Did not play

Outlook: St. Viator needs a win and then lots of help to make the playoffs. The Lions currently have 33 playoff points and the most they could earn is 40.

Wauconda (7-1, 5-1) at Antioch (8-0, 6-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week Grant 27, Wauconda 25; Antioch 50, North Chicago 0

Last year: Wauconda 25, Antioch 20

Outlook: Our Lake County Blue Plate Special of the Week featuring two Northern Lake County Conference standouts. Wauconda beat Antioch last year, only the fifth time the Sequoits have ever lost an NLCC game, and must win this to earn a share of the title. “We will be tested,” Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. “Wauconda is as good as advertised. Wauconda beat us last year. We’re looking for redemption.” Antioch has returned two kickoffs for scores this year and is returning the kicks to midfield consistently, Glashagel noted. Antioch also is a robust plus-19 in turnover ratio. Sequoits defensive back and captain Alex Hestowski has five interceptions. “He’s the smartest defender on the team,” Glashagel said. Glashagel calls defensive ends Harry Victor and Willie Hamilton the “Bash Brothers.” They have combined for six sacks and 15 tackles for loss. On the other sideline, Wauconda looks to get back in the win column quickly with the playoffs starting next week. “This is always a physical game and both sides bring good intensity,” Bulldogs coach Chris Prostka said. “Our schedule the last two weeks will definitely help in being prepared for the playoffs.” Luke Sickmeir is leading the state in interceptions with eight, in addition to his 774 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns (nine receiving, one kickoff and one interception return for a score). Brody Rudolph leads the team with 16 total touchdowns. Wauconda is at just under 3,500 yards of total offense through eight games. Prostka noted Cashton Silton is having a great senior year, leading the team in tackles. Cooper Karaszewski is just under 1,000 yards passing.

Antioch’s Gavin Stone (1) and quarterback Ethan Patel (16) celebrate Stone’s touchdown run earlier this season against Grayslake Central. (John Starks/Daily Herald)

Grayslake Central (4-4, 3-3) at Grant Community (6-2, 5-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Grayslake North 34, Grayslake Central 29; Grant 27, Wauconda 25

Last year: Grant 54, Grayslake Central 20

Outlook: Grant scored a major win last week against Wauconda. A win at home in Week 9 would certainly help the Bulldogs with playoff positioning, entering the fray with a 7-2 mark. “Grayslake Central is very big and physical on the offensive and defensive lines,” Grant coach Tim Norwood said. Tyler Crutchfield, a three-year starter at corner for Grant, has 39 tackles and a pick, while senior linebacker Logan Hamm is second on the team with 61 tackles and one sack. Senior outside backer Carmelo Smith has 49 tackles and two interceptions. On offense, junior running backs Jackson Fudala (104 carries, 684 yards, seven touchdowns) and Doltyn Longtin (116 carries, 600 yards, nine touchdowns) have combined to rush for nearly 1,300 yards. Senior linebacker Wyatt Cornell has 90 tackles. Grayslake Central looks to snap a two-game losing streak. “As a first-year head coach, I am proud of how our kids continue to work,” Central coach Brent Pitt said. The Rams put up 432 total yards in last week’s game against Grayslake North. Ray Ray Wright (two touchdowns) and Ken-Ye Pendleton Jr. each ran for 100-plus yards.

Round Lake (2-6, 0-6) at North Chicago (1-7, 0-6)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Lakes 31, Round Lake 14; Antioch 50, North Chicago 0

Last year: North Chicago 55, Round Lake 7

Outlook: The winner of this game will close out the regular season with its first league win. Round Lake also is still in the playoff hunt. “This is the first time in a long time the last football game has meant something in Round Lake,” Panthers coach Randi Dey said. “This may not be where we wanted to be at this point of our season, but it’s growth, and that’s something I can appreciate.” Dey said seniors Jayden Jean Baptiste and Demetrian Ash both have been working hard since the coach arrived. “They both are in our secondary and have done a good job with pass defense,” he said. Senior Olivier Charkiewicz, winner of the No. 65 Honor Roll Award last year at the school, has filled in wonderfully at linebacker, Dey added. The coach noted Dylan Wright also is having a great year with 56 tackles.

Grayslake North (5-3, 3-3) at Lakes (3-5, 2-4)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Grayslake North 34, Grayslake Central 29 Lakes 31, Round Lake 14

Last year: Lakes 35, Grayslake North 0

Outlook: North broke a three-game losing streak last week. “Getting back to the playoffs has given our players an extra spring in their step and a renewed sense of accomplishment,” North coach Brian Johnson said. Johnson pointed out this Lakes game falls into the rivalry category with many players growing up and going to middle school together. Beckett Dovel leads the way for North on defense with 87 total tackles, while Jaylen Newkirk has thrown for 1,321 yards and 17 touchdowns. Jay Kelly has 619 rushing yards (three TDs) and Newkirk has 414 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns (7.0 yards per carry). Johnson said senior tight end-defensive end Noah Hickson is one of the most respected players on the team. Senior linebacker/tight end Angel Rosiles “is a tough, hard-nosed player that always is going to go full speed and that sets an example,” Johnson said. Lakes senior quarterback Ethan Gialo has passed for 909 yards and run for 747 more, while senior linebacker Robbie Siebert has broken the school record for career fumble recoveries with nine. Senior linebacker Porter Cramond has seven tackles for loss. Lakes coach Jason Ellerman said senior center Liam Riordan has really solidified that position all year, while junior defensive back Dylan Rudnicki only plays on punt return, but is a key member of the Eagles’ scout teams and takes every snap at running back and defensive back. Ellerman’s squad has won two games in a row heading into Week 9.

Carmel Catholic (3-5, 0-2) at Oak Park Fenwick (5-3, 0-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Carmel 42, De La Salle 0; Fenwick 56, St. Viator 6

Last year: Carmel 38, Fenwick 24

Outlook: The winner of this game finishes third in the Chicago Catholic League Orange Division. “We’re both jockeying for playoff positions and would love to have momentum heading into the opening round,” Carmel defensive coordinator Billy Moore said. Carmel’s defense had three interceptions last week, including Jameer Miles returning one for a touchdown. Kyron Hart added two more TDs to his season total in the win. Moore said Lucas Gonzalez continues to have a solid year at corner and returning kicks. Moore added Trey Foster embodies what leadership looks like and anchors the Corsairs’ offensive line. Senior outside linebacker Eli Turner did not play last year, but has stepped things up “big for us this year,” Moore said. “He has done everything we’ve asked, exceeding expectations.”

Lake Zurich (5-3, 5-1) at Warren Township (4-4, 4-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Libertyville 14, Lake Zurich 10; Warren 49, Waukegan 0

Last year: Warren 27, Lake Zurich 17

Outlook: A North Suburban heavyweight battle in Gurnee. “Warren is young on defense, but incredibly talented and physical,” Bears coach Dragan Teonic said. “I am always impressed with how hard their kids play.” On defense, Tyler Bonelli-Sanchez and Arturo Zarinana are leading the Bears in tackles, while Rocco DiCanio, Frankie Arnieri and Jackson Lewandowski each have six tackles for loss. On offense, Lake Zurich has five players with 150 or more rushing yards this year with Adrian Stanek, Joey Wessman, Benji Ferguson, CJ Abrantes and Gavin Blanco being in that group. Luke Papesch, Javian Blanco and Logan Coyle are in the double-digit reception category. Teonic lauded the work of Connor Wise, Joshua Silver and Noah Pinto for their work on the scout team. Warren junior tailback Johnny Randolph has rushed for 1,024 yards on 164 carries with 15 touchdowns. Warren coach Bryan McNulty noted senior Joey Vaughn returned to football this season and has helped on special teams and the scout team. Senior offensive lineman Emmanuel Ubaka is a starter “who is the most consistent performer on the offense.” Senior wideout Ozi Hernandez was voted by his teammates as the best overall person on the team according to the team’s standards. “You will not find a more respectful kid in the senior class,” McNulty said. McNulty knows his team will encounter “a typical Lake Zurich team,” Friday night. “They are well-coached, stingy on defense and sound on offense. They are a 6A-7A power and it shows.”

Zion-Benton (6-2, 4-2) at Libertyville (6-2, 6-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Zion 21, Mundelein 12; Libertyville 14, Lake Zurich 10

Last year: Libertyville 35, Zion 20

Outlook: Libertyville will end the regular season with no less than a share of the North Suburban title and will look to win it outright in Week 9. “Zion is having a good season,” Libertyville coach Tim Budge said. “They have one of the best running backs in the area and some good receivers who are deep threats.” Budge calls defensive lineman Liam Coyle one of the most football-savvy guys on the team. Aiden Weaver broke long runs in recent games against league toughies Lake Zurich and Warren, “that have helped give us momentum,” Budge noted. Also of note have been wideout and punt returner Colin Waddell and defensive utilityman (DL, ILB, OLB) Mason Roe. “Colin has stepped up for us at receiver and has done a nice job returning punts,” Budge said. “Mason is willing to play wherever the team needs him.”

Waukegan (0-8, 0-6) at Stevenson (3-5, 3-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Warren 49, Waukegan 0; Stevenson 31, Lake Forest 7

Last year: Stevenson 45, Waukegan 12

Outlook: Stevenson rolls into its regular-season finale having won three of its last four. Patriots coach Brent Becker loved his team’s defensive play in last week’s Lake Forest victory. Stevenson’s defense forced seven three-and-outs. “It was a great defensive effort by the full group,” he said. Connor Kenning led the way with seven tackles (one for loss) and two sacks. Brody Delevitt and Tyler Becker each had five tackles, while Tyler Becker added a pick. “Brody and Tyler provided great coverage and run support,” Brent Becker said. He added Blake Mac Millin, Dylan Nelson and Mickey Agee provided “tight coverage on the outside, taking away throwing windows and routes downfield.” Offensively, Agee ran 15 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns (long run of 78 yards), helping Stevenson rack up 240 rushing yards (6.9 yards per carry). Luke Clark caught six passes for 113 yards and a score, while Eli Sigal threw for 132 yards and one touchdown.

Offensively, junior quarterback Robert Morales connected with receiver Louie Franczyk on passes covering 17, 55, and 53 yards, respectively. Last season, the Blazers snapped a nine-year losing streak to their district rivals. Willowbrook, which has won three straight games, features tailback Jax Chavez, who carried the ball 18 times for 95 yards and a touchdown last week against Proviso East.

St. Francis (4-4, 1-1) at Montini (6-2, 1-1)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: St. Francis 52, Niles Notre Dame 24; Montini 49, Marmion 7

Outlook: This is a battle between defending state champions — St. Francis (Class 5A) and Montini (Class 4A). Since returning from an early season injury, junior quarterback Jadon Wilson has been on a roll, evidenced by his four-touchdown performance last week. Alex Taylor, who began the game against Niles Notre Dame with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, also caught a second-half touchdown pass from Wilson. St. Francis has posted back-to-back, 52-point showings the past two weeks. Senior safety James McGrath is a Western Illinois commit. Montini, which has scored 105 points the past two weeks, feature Miami (Fla.) commit Israel Abrams, a five-star recruit who has completed 120 of 193 passes for 2,276 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 10 touchdowns. Senior receiver Damacio Ortegon has caught 33 passes for 805 yards and 11 touchdowns.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Nazareth 28, St. Patrick 0; St. Rita 56, Benet Academy 24

Junior quarterback Alex Mitchell tossed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cristiano Diomede last week, while offensive lineman Jackson Bonebrake pounced on a fumble in the end zone for the first touchdown of his career. The Redwings’ defense allowed 621 yards of offense to high-powered St. Rita. The Shamrocks, who have lost their last two games to Joliet Catholic and Nazareth, feature senior quarterback Gavin Gardiner and tailbacks Jayden Miranda and Nick Miro.

Joliet Catholic (5-3, 2-0) at IC Catholic Prep (7-1, 2-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last week: Mt. Carmel 42, Joliet Catholic 14; Loyola Academy 45, IC Catholic Prep 35

Outlook: The Knights proved their mettle last week, jumping out to a 35-21 halftime lead over the state’s top-ranked Class 8A team, Loyola Academy, before the Ramblers scored 24 unanswered second-half points. Senior quarterback Nate Lang passed for 317 of his 370 yards and five touchdowns in the opening half, including a pair of touchdowns to junior Grant Bowen (10 catches, 109 yards). Jaden Penna, Anthony Carroccio (five catches, 102 yards), and Will Schmidt also caught touchdown passes. “I thought they fought the best team in the state for four quarters,” said Knights coach Bill Krefft. Now, they look to finish the regular season on a winning note against another perennial powerhouse — Joliet Catholic. The Hilltoppers feature quarterback Liam Huffman and receiver Keegan Castagnoli.

Wheaton Academy (6-2, 4-2) at Christ the King (1-7, 0-6)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Aurora Christian 32, Wheaton Academy 27; Chicago Christian 46, Christ the King 6

Last year: Wheaton Academy 42, Christ the King 0

Two-way standout Logan Oros added 11 catches for 104 yards. “It’s a tough group of guys,” said Warriors coach Justin Swider, whose team lost to Bishop McNamara in similar fashion two weeks ago. “We’re far from done. We’ve got to respond, come back this week and win a ball game, and see where the chips fall for us moving forward in the playoffs.” The Gladiators have dropped seven straight — their defense has allowed 34 or more points in six of those seven defeats.

Glenbard North (3-5, 1-5) at Wheaton North (5-3, 3-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: St. Charles North 33, Glenbard North 32; Geneva 42, Wheaton North 14

Last year: Glenbard North 39, Wheaton North 20

Outlook: No player works harder than Glenbard North two-way standout Angelo Gatses. Following a 34-carry, 289-yard, three-touchdown effort against Geneva two weeks ago, the senior ran for three more touchdowns and 170 yards on 31 carries last week. That equals 65 carries for 459 yards and six touchdowns over the past two weeks. Gatses also starts on defense at cornerback and returns kickoffs and punts. Junior quarterback Logan Kramer accounted for 262 yards of offense last week with two touchdowns. Two of the Panthers’ five losses were one-point heartbreakers against the St. Charles schools. Three weeks ago, the Falcons were high-flying with a 5-0 mark. Now, they look to snap a three-game losing streak that included one-score losses to WW South and Batavia. Grant Neibch and Rory Burke shared time at quarterback for the Falcons last week and both threw touchdown passes — to Adam Schilling and Tyler Snow. Both playoff-bound squads will help their postseason seeding with a win.

Lake Park (2-6, 1-5) at St. Charles North (4-4, 2-4)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: WW South 31, Lake Park 19; St. Charles North 33, Glenbard North 32

Last year: St. Charles North 35, Lake Park 16

Senior quarterback Tay Smith leads the Lancers’ offense, flanked by junior receivers TJ Ogunribido. Drew D’Alessandro, and Logan Boebel. Junior tailback Alexander Gavrylyuk gained 64 yards on 12 carries last week. St. Charles North posted its second one-point win in three weeks against Glenbard North. Trailing 32-26, the North Stars drove 80 yards in the final 1:30 for the go-ahead score — an acrobatic 56-yard reception by Kiran Walker from quarterback Landon Conroy. Earlier in the game, Conroy connected on touchdown passes to Jaden Tran and Jack Leigl. Tailbacks Tommy Lendl and Andre Smith handle the bulk of the North Stars’ ground game.

Wheaton Warrenville South (6-2, 5-1) at Batavia (6-2, 5-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: WW South 31, Lake Park 19; Batavia 34, St. Charles East 14

Last year: Batavia 45, WW South 12

Outlook: The Tigers bring a four-game winning streak to Batavia in a matchup that could have a bearing on postseason seeding. Plus, the winner has an outside shot at a share of the DuKane Conference title — if Geneva loses to St. Charles East Friday night. The junior-heavy Tigers feature quarterback AJ Rogers, wideouts Blake Ittersagen, Steven Harvey, Kennan Yarbrough, tailbacks Trent Simpson, Malaki Thomas, senior tight end Jacob Bellows, linebackers Clark Jensen, Logan Prignano, safety Mason Bachara, and offensive linemen Mitchell Goblet and Caden Schwichtenberg. WW South is looking for its first win over Batavia since joining the DuKane in 2018. Batavia, looking for its third consecutive victory, enjoyed one of its top defensive performances of the season last week, forcing four punts behind Luke Gardner (11 solo tackles) and Gavin McKelvie (10 solos, three assists). Offensively, senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren has accounted for 38 touchdowns — 26 passing, 12 rushing — with 2,186 yards passing. Senior receivers Darin Ashiru (115-yard average, eight touchdowns), Brennon Zeng (nine touchdowns), and tight end Thomas Prescott (three touchdowns) are three of Vander Luitgaren’s favorite targets. Tailback Charlie Rosengren topped the 100-yard mark with a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown against St. Charles East.

East St. Louis (7-1) at Naperville North (7-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: East St. Louis 54, Alton 0; Naperville North 14, Neuqua Valley 7

Outlook: Nobody can accuse Huskies coach Sean Drendel of dodging the competition. Earlier in the season, Naperville North played nonconference games against New Trier, Libertyville, and Barrington. Now, they host one of the state’s perennial powers in East St. Louis, which has finished first or second in the state (Class 6A) six consecutive seasons. The Flyers, competing at the 7A level this postseason, feature a high-flying attack led by quarterback Reece Shanklin, tailback Ronnie Gomiller, and receivers Laron Baker, Jr., and Jamarion Flowers. Outside linebacker Omari Hogan (team-high 11 tackles per game), lineman Caleb Brown (10 tackles per game), and cornerback Raheem Floyd (four interceptions) anchor a defense that has posted four straight shutouts. East St. Louis holds a 6-0 mark against Illinois teams this season. The Huskies clinched the DuPage Valley Conference title last week behind quarterback Dante Colasante’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Jack Zitko and tailback Charlie Neumann’s eight-yard, go-ahead touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Lockport (4-4) at Waubonsie Valley (3-5)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Lincoln-Way East 40, Lockport 0; Naperville Central 17, Waubonsie Valley 7

Outlook: Tailback John Hung, who rushed for 157 yards against Metea Valley two weeks, accounted for the Warriors’ lone score against Naperville Central. Hung has tallied four touchdowns over the past three games. Quarterback Nolan Alberson directs the offense, supported by wide receiver Aaron Williams and Hung. Lockport has run the gamut the past two weeks, earning a 41-0 win over Andrew before being blanked by state-ranked Lincoln-Way East. Quarterback Griffin Russell leads the attack, flanked by receivers Khairi Sias, Jaxson Little, and Andrew Maloney, and tight end Joe Zachary. Outside linebacker Griffin Benson and free safety Josh Kies anchor the Porters’ defense.

Neuqua Valley (3-5, 2-2) at Naperville Central (4-4, 3-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last week: Naperville North 14, Neuqua Valley 7; Naperville Central 17, Waubonsie Valley 7

Last year: Naperville Central 24, Neuqua Valley 17

Outlook: Neuqua Valley has won three of the last five meetings between the teams, who didn’t face each other in 2024 due to conference realignment. Now, they’re back as DuPage Valley Conference rivals. The Wildcats gave DVC champion Naperville North a scare last week. Drake Mennecke scored Neuqua’s lone touchdown on a 56-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. After that run, the Wildcats were limited to 47 rushing yards the rest of the way. Naperville Central tailback Ryan Jacobson tallied a pair of touchdowns against Waubonsie Valley. Senior quarterback Simon Hayes leads the offense, supported by receivers Mark Williams, Kyle Clark, and backs Landon Nelson and Jacobson. Winners of three of its last four, Naperville Central looks to carry the momentum into the postseason.
