DuPage County resident dies of West Nile-related causes
DuPage County health authorities confirmed Tuesday that an adult county resident has died of causes related to West Nile virus.
“We are deeply saddened to share news of the first West Nile virus-related death in DuPage County this year,” DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Adam Forker said in a written statement. “Please remember to take simple steps to stop mosquito bites so you, your family, and your neighbors can stay safe.”
The fatality is the third in Illinois this year attributed to the virus, according to state health officials. Last year saw 10 deadly cases in Illinois, the state reported.
DuPage authorities did not identify the person who died, but indicated the case was among six confirmed in the county so far in 2026.
Infection occurs in humans when they are bitten by mosquitoes that acquired the virus by feeding on infected birds. Most human cases have few if any symptoms and may go unreported. About one in five people will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, health officials said.
Those over 60, or with medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease and organ transplants, are at a higher risk for serious illness and, in rare cases, permanent neurological damage, coma and death.
The best way to prevent the illness is to avoid mosquito bites by reducing the insects’ presence around you by eliminating standing water and wearing long sleeves and mosquito repellent when outdoors.
