Williams, Libertyville prove unstoppable against Mundelein
Libertyville did not have its best offensive game of the season Friday night at Mundelein. But the Wildcats can always rely on University of Texas-bound senior Brock Williams to get the job done when they need a touchdown.
Williams scored three touchdowns against the Mustangs, and the defense recorded a shutout for a second straight week as Libertyville posted a 28-0 North Suburban Conference victory over Mundelein.
"Defensively, we've been playing really well, they've been battling all year, and they're great at executing the game plan," said Libertyville coach Tim Budge, whose team beat Stevenson 28-0 last week. "(Williams) is going to Texas for a reason, he's a wonderful player, and we find a way to get him the ball because he's electric when he gets the ball."
Williams (37 yards on six rushes) scored on a two-yard touchdown run on the last play of the first quarter before Jack Zaban's extra point made the score 7-0.
Libertyville senior Andrew Weaver has missed a lot of playing time this season, including the entire Stevenson game last week. But his 11-yard TD run on a great cut-back move to his right gave the Wildcats (5-2, 5-0) a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Mundelein (3-3, 1-3) did a decent job of containing Libertyville's offense overall, but the Mustangs couldn’t get their offense going against the stubborn Wildcats defense.
Cade Christensen intercepted a pass to set up Libertyville's next touchdown. With four players in the backfield, Williams' 13-yard TD run boosted the lead to 21-0 early in the fourth quarter.
"We knew going into this game that their front seven is really strong and it was hard for us to get moving on their front seven," said Mundelein coach Johnny Cowhey. “(Williams) is a really special player. Our defensive back did everything technique-wise right on that play, but sometimes you lose to a guy who's a better athlete."
Cowhey was referring to Williams' 34-yard TD catch from Jackson Yarc with a defender draped all over him to close the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
"Our defense is playing really well with another zero on the board," Williams said. "Our offense put up 28 on the board, but we've still got a lot of things to take care of offensively during practice, and once we figure that out and start playing as a team we're going to be really good."
The Wildcats' running game was stymied by the Mundelein defense overall as Weaver was held to 17 yards on 14 carries, including numerous attempts where he was tackled for a loss.
Yarc was under pressure on many of his dropbacks as he rushed for 24 yards on 10 carries. Junior Daniel Felli led the Mustangs with 32 yards on three rushes. Mundelein's Dylan Leipold was held to 12 yards on 6 rushes. Zaban hit Samir Shaaya with a 20-yard pass on a fake punt early in the second half.
