Victim identified in fatal shooting outside Oak Brook mall

Authorities on Thursday identified the man shot to death Wednesday outside Oakbrook Center mall in Oak Brook, but charges in the shooting still hadn’t been announced.

Justin Hill, 28, of Dolton, was killed in the shooting that occurred about noon Wednesday in a parking lot near the L.L. Bean store, according to the Oak Brook Police Department.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday at the DuPage County Coroner’s office. Officials with that office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The gunfire followed an altercation between five people who were in two vehicles, police said.

Hill was dead when police arrived, authorities said. A woman was injured.

Three people involved in the confrontation drove off but were pulled over by police in neighboring Oakbrook Terrace. Authorities said two men and one woman remained in custody Thursday afternoon at the Oak Brook Police Department.

Investigators continue to review digital and physical evidence related to the incident, police said.

A spokesman for DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said officials did not expect to file charges Thursday.

The woman injured in the shooting remained hospitalized Thursday, though her condition was unknown. A police officer has been assigned to the medical facility to assist with security and the ongoing investigation, officials said.

Oak Brook police originally scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon but instead released a brief written statement. They said they would provide another update by 4 p.m. Friday.

During a press briefing Wednesday, Police Chief Brian Strockis said he didn’t have information about a motive and declined to disclose the ages, sexes and hometowns of the people involved.

He credited automated license plate reading cameras with helping investigators quickly track down the three people in custody.

The incident marked the second shooting at the Oak Brook mall in recent years.

The shopping center was locked down in December 2021 when gunfire erupted as three men argued while in line at a pretzel shop. Five people were shot, and a woman broke her ankle while fleeing the area.
