Daily Herald Week 7 high school football previews

Hersey (6-0, 2-0) at Elk Grove (2-4, 0-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Hersey beat Wheeling 1-0; Buffalo Grove 31, Elk Grove 14

Last year: Hersey 54, Elk Grove 14

Outlook: Hersey is going to have to shake off a little rust after the Huskies won by forfeit over Wheeling last week. But don’t expect that rust to be very deep. Hersey’s offense is averaging 43 points. While the offense has received most of the attention, the defense led by Ryan Haefka, Nick Jelaca, Tillman Mulder and Spiro Zarafonitis has quietly been effective, allowing just 12.6 points per game. Elk Grove began the season with a huge splash, winning its first two games. But the winds shifted and now the Grenadiers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. The Grens are averaging just nine points per game during that stretch.

Buffalo Grove (4-2, 1-1) at Rolling Meadows (2-4, 1-1)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Buffalo Grove 31, Elk Grove 14; Prospect 56, Rolling Meadows 14

Last year: Rolling Meadows 59, Buffalo Grove 27

Outlook: With their win last week, Buffalo Grove has clinched a playoff spot and is back in the playoffs after a two-year absence. The Bison are playing very well under coach Jeff Vlk, averaging nearly 30 points per game. Matthew Kaput is coming off another huge game, running for 158 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, quarterback Nathan Raef has done a solid job of keeping defenses from keying on Kaput, throwing to Matthew Hong and Landon Durham. Rolling Meadows used the same formula as the Bison. The Mustangs have leaned heavily on running back Luke Harvey, who has been extremely dependable all season. Quarterback Gavin Prickett has stepped up quite nicely, throwing to Brady Connors, Damien Ortega and Dominic Polenzani as the Mustangs are averaging 27 points per game. However, the Meadows defense has struggled at times, allowing 33 points per game.

Prospect (6-0, 2-0) at Wheeling (0-6, 0-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Prospect 56, Rolling Meadows 14; Hersey 1, Wheeling 0

Last year: Prospect 70, Wheeling 19

Outlook: Prospect continue to have its offense operating at high gear, averaging nearly 44 points per game. Jackson Cacini, who has thrown for 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns, has spread the wealth to Gordon Kemp, Henry Koziol, Matthew Collins, Jake Pahlke and Matthew Donnelly. Meanwhile, Donnelly has rushed for 13 touchdowns this season. Wheeling is happy to be back on a football field. The Wildcats’ next victory will be their 200th in school history.

Hoffman Estates (3-3, 1-1) at Fremd (5-1, 2-0)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Hoffman Estates 13, Schaumburg 0; Fremd 31, Conant. 12

Last year: Fremd 35, Hoffman Estates 13

Outlook: Hoffman has been using the ground to find success this year. With Braylin Scales running for 154 yards and a touchdown last week in their victory and Riley Lennert running hard in the Hawks’ other two wins, Hoffman has become a ground and pound team. But the Hawks’ running game will get severely tested by the Fremd defense. With Tom O’Brien joined by Liam Tyrrell, Joey Glass, Kevin Miller, George Kalkounos and Mike Perez upfront, the Vikings limited Conant’s vaunted rushing attack to 34 yards last week. Meanwhile Fremd has its own one-two punch in the backfield with Jayden Faulkner and Raizo Ruiz.

Palatine (2-4, 0-2) at Schaumburg (1-5, 0-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Barrington 31, Palatine 0; Hoffman Estates 13, Schaumburg 0

Last year: Palatine 49, Schaumburg 14

Outlook: Not only are both teams looking for a win, but they also both are looking to score after each team was shut out last week. Both need a win here to keep their playoff hopes alive. Both are struggling offensively with Palatine averaging 16 points per game and Schaumburg 18. Last week’s loss to Barrington was the Pirates’ first decided by more than a touchdown. Palatine managed 41 yards on the ground last week and punted six times. Schaumburg also struggled on the ground, running for 82 yards.

St. Francis (2-4) vs. St. Viator (1-5) at Forest View

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: St. Francis 25, Nazareth 22; St. Viator 30, Marian Catholic 21

Outlook: St. Viator broke its 13-game losing streak with its first Catholic League victory. The offense was clicking well with Dylan Molina and Danny Travers combing at quarterback to go 16-of-22 for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Seamus Rustay is also becoming a force on both sides of the ball with 78 yards rushing, including a touchdown, and seven tackles on defense. St. Francis is better than its record indicates. And they are coming off their first Catholic League win of the season by beating highly regarded Nazareth Academy. Jadon Wilson, who transferred from East St. Louis, appears to be healed after an early season injury, throwing three touchdown passes last week.

Morton (1-5, 1-2) at Leyden (2-4, 1-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Willowbrook 15, Morton 7; Addison Trail 48, Leyden 20

Last year: Leyden 31, Morton 22

Outlook: One win in their final three games would make the Eagles playoff eligible for the first time since 2016. This week’s game would be a great place to wrap things up against a Morton team the Eagles have beaten three years in a row and eight of the last nine times. Sonny Falco continues to play well at quarterback while Armani Santana may be one of the best unsung wide receivers.

Conant (5-1, 1-1) at Barrington (2-4, 2-0)

When: Saturday, noon

Last week: Fremd 31, Conant 12; Barrington 31, Palatine 0

Last year: Barrington 41, Conant 14

Outlook: This is the annual Saturday afternoon homecoming game at Barrington. After winning their first five, Conant stumbled a bit last week. The Cougars’ running game was slowed significantly, rushing for 34 yards. Conant did throw the ball 14 times with Anthony Marchese finishing with 198 yards and two touchdowns. After an 0-4 start, Barrington has found its offensive chops in the last two games, scoring 80 points. Archer Haley has settled the offense down at quarterback while Vince Costa has stepped in at times to run the ball from the signal caller position. Meanwhile, Lamar Osterhues looks very healthy, running for 193 yards last week. The Broncos defense has also been stout. Led by Duke Matiyow (46 tackles), Owen Nichols (46 tackles), Jonathan Steiner (43 tackles) and Donovan Bjerregaard-Dionne (31 tackles), the Broncos have allowed just 21 points in their last two games.

New Trier (6-0) at Maine West (1-5)

When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Last week: New Trier 42, Deerfield 0; Niles North 35, Maine West 21

Outlook: Maine West got off to a fast start last week but couldn’t hang on. The Warriors have leaned heavily on Davion Tate, and he responded last week with an 80-yard touchdown catch and later a touchdown run. Maine West’s defense has had trouble this season, allowing 35 points or more in four of its six games. New Trier comes into this week not scoring less than 28 points in a game all season.

Maine East (0-6) at Glenbrook South (4-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Vernon Hills 47, Maine East 6; Glenbrook South 57, Highland Park 6

Outlook: Maine East’s difficulties continued last week. One highlight was the passing of Ryan Smith, who threw for 106 yards and a touchdown. Most of those yards came on a 54-yard scoring pass was to Juwon Alowooja. After losing their first two games, Glenbrook South has won four in a row.

Wauconda (6-0, 4-0) at Grayslake Central (4-2, 3-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Wauconda 69, Round Lake 6; Grayslake Central 35, North Chicago 26

Last year: Wauconda 53, Grayslake Central 27

Outlook: This game, our Lake County Blue Plate Special of the Week, has several important implications. Wauconda, already guaranteed a playoff spot with the six wins, needs to win to stay atop the Northern Lake County Conference, while a Central win helps it keep pace in the league title race. Wauconda, ranked No. 8 in the Illinois Media Class 6A state poll through five weeks, averages 419 rushing yards per game (32 rushing TDs) and has converted 58% of its fourth-down attempts. “Grayslake Central has two runners with great speed,” Wauconda coach Chris Prostka said. “It will take a great team effort to try and contain them.” The Bulldogs have 13 interceptions and Luke Sickmeir has seven of those. Prostka noted Sebastian Torres, a varsity newcomer, earned the starting center spot, while fellow newcomer Jackson Ryan also has continued to improve. Central has won three of its last four and put up 30 or more points in each of those triumphs. The Rams average nearly 32 points a game and have run for 1,639 yards. Ken-Ye Pendleton Jr. has 908 rushing yards, while Ray Ray Wright has 633 rushing yards. “Those two have been a big part of our offense and have given us the ability to make big plays,” Central coach Brent Pitt said. Pendleton Jr. ran for 287 yards last week against North Chicago, while Wright had 113 yards. Jayden Musial also had a good game with four catches for 61 yards and a score. Pitt said his team has to be physical, take care of the football and execute assignments. “Wauconda is a team we have to be ready to play against for four quarters,” he said.

Grayslake North (4-2, 2-2) at Antioch (6-0, 4-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Antioch 36, Lakes 6; Grant 24, Grayslake North 21

Last year: Antioch 49, Grayslake North 0

Outlook: Antioch, ranked seventh in the Illinois Media Class 5A state poll through five weeks, is a guaranteed playoff qualifier based on the IHSA’s new playoff guidelines with six wins. The Sequoits have scored 185 points in their last three games and have scored 30 or more points in every contest this season. Gavin Stone should go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark this week. He’s at 973 yards on 97 carries (10.3 per carry) and 20 touchdowns, while Logan Lennon has run for 423 yards (9.8 per carry). Ethan Patel has thrown for 864 yards and nine scores. Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said he’s been impressed with varsity newcomers Chance Verden (WR-KR-DB) and Trevor Wendt (OL). “Chance has turned out to be a great weapon for us as a dominant wide receiver, kick returner and defensive back,” he said. “Trevor is really new to football and has turned out to be one of our best offensive lineman.” North has lost its last two after starting 4-0. “Antioch has a high-powered offense with some incredible running backs,” Knights coach Brian Johnson said. The Knights average 201.5 yards rushing and 163.5 yards passing and their touchdown production reflects that balance (14 passing, 12 rushing). Varsity newcomer and transfer Brooklyn Washington (junior WR) has 302 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns. Junior running back Jay Kelly, also new to varsity, has run for a team-best 507 yards on 85 carries and has three TDs.

Grant Community (4-2, 3-1) at Round Lake (2-4, 0-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Grant 24, Grayslake North 21; Wauconda 69, Round Lake 6

Last year: Grant 65, Round Lake 17

Outlook: Coach Tim Norwood’s Grant squad has won three in a row, including two games by a combined six points. Senior quarterback Connor Evans, a varsity newcomer, “is doing a great job being a facilitator in our offense,” Norwood said, while senior linebacker Logan Hamm, also new to the varsity, is Grant’s second-leading tackler. Junior running back Doltyn Longtin has run for 535 yards and nine touchdowns, while Jackson Fudala, also a junior, is at 435 rushing yards and four scores. Senior linebacker Wyatt Cornell leads the team with 61 tackles. Round Lake looks to snap a four-game losing streak.

North Chicago (1-5, 0-4) at Lakes (1-5, 0-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Grayslake Central 35, North Chicago 26; Antioch 36, Lakes 6

Last year: Lakes 46, North Chicago 7

Outlook: AJ Perna is the Eagles’ leading receiver as a running back, averaging 15 yards a catch. Lakes is averaging a little over one takeaway on defense. Coach Jason Ellerman noted senior center Liam Riordan has done a nice job as a first-year starter, while junior running back Jordan Barry, who is also the backup quarterback, has done well blocking and running the ball. North Chicago, which lost by nine to Grayslake Central last week, looks to snap a four-game losing streak.

Maine South (5-1) at Vernon Hills (2-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Vernon Hills 47, Maine East 6; Maine South 56, Niles West 0

Outlook: Maine South used a unique technique last week in its win. The Hawks opted to alternate series with their first and second team offenses to get both of their teams some work. Maine South scored on all seven of those possessions. Jameson Purcell threw just three passes, and all went for touchdowns. Purcell has completed 65% of his passes for 1,060 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions in 14 quarters, only finishing three halves of football. Payton Donaldson and Matthew Schlenhardt average a combined 8.7 yards per carry and have scored 12 touchdowns. The Hawks’ starting offensive line has allowed one sack. Coach Dave Inserra noted varsity newcomer Aidan Connolly (DL) “has wreaked havoc in the back field,” he said. “He is fast, explosive and tough.” Wideout Elliott Arteta averages 21.7 yards per catch (five touchdowns) as a varsity newcomer, while wideout-corner Keaton Vitel, also new to the big club, has six total touchdowns, including a pair on kick returns. Vernon Hills has won two of its last three after starting 0-3. Vernon Hills senior quarterback Colin McMurray has thrown for 896 yards and 10 touchdowns and also has rushed for 275 yards. Seniors Jaelon Landers (220 yards, three touchdowns) and Augie Leahy (one touchdown) also help in the backfield, while McMurray has spread the ball to a variety of targets with seniors Liam Wozniak (217 yards receiving, four TDs), Leahy (115 yards, two touchdowns), junior Andrew Grossnickle (one touchdown) and sophomores Charles McRae (181 yards) and Omari Miller (101 yards, one touchdown) getting in on the action. Seniors Jonathan Keats (DE, 33 tackles), Mikey Lewis (LB, 32 tackles, one interception) and juniors Charlie Schenk (DB, 52 tackles) and Carson Alper (LB, 46.5 tackles) lead the defense. Coach Colton Jewell said Schenk is a “stud athlete who is not afraid of contact,” he said, while Alper, one of the captains, has been utilized like a Swiss Army knife on all sides of the ball. Jewell added sophomore McRae was pulled up to varsity to help on offense, moving from quarterback to wideout.

Warren (3-3, 3-1) at Stevenson (1-5, 1-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last week: Warren 49, Zion 6; Libertyville 28, Stevenson 0

Last year: Warren 28, Stevenson 13

Outlook: Warren has won three in a row after starting 0-3. “Stevenson’s record is very deceiving,” Blue Devils coach Bryan McNulty said. “I think that is a good football team that just hasn’t hit its stride yet.” Warren freshman safety Kayden Hudgins “is going to be a big-time player if he continues to develop, especially in the offseason,” McNulty said. Junior offensive linemen Carter Davis and Caleb Ausburn, McNulty added, have improved each week. “They still have a ways to go from a physical development standpoint, which is common with juniors, but I am more than confident they will handle that.” McNulty added junior defensive back Jaden Wright into that playing well category. Stevenson’s Brody Delevitt had nine tackles and one QB pressure last week against Libertyville, and Mickey Agee had nine tackles (two for loss). Matthew Ravenscraft had five tackles, while Brandon Hersh (six catches, 42 yards) and Cole Shein (15 carries, 68 yards) were top offensive performers.

Lake Zurich (4-2, 4-0) at Lake Forest (1-5, 1-3)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Lake Zurich 15, Mundelein 9; Lake Forest 56, Waukegan 6

Offensively, senior quarterback Joey Wessman has scored six rushing touchdowns and passed for 433 yards and four scores. Junior running back Adrian Stanek has run for 289 yards and two TDs, while freshman running back CJ Abrantes has run for 168 yards and two touchdowns. “This team is capable of so much more when we don’t make mental mistakes,” Lake Zurich coach Dragan Teonic said. Sophomore DB-WR Logan Coyle has caught nine passes for 121 yards and has two interceptions on defense and is making game-changing plays, Teonic noted, while sophomore DB-WR Max Grund has been a consistent presence on defense with a tackle for loss and an interception. Fellow varsity newcomer Javian Blanco, a sophomore DB-WR, has nine catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Libertyville (4-2, 4-0) at Mundelein (3-3, 1-3)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Libertyville 28, Stevenson 0; Lake Zurich 15, Mundelein 9

Last year: Libertyville 17, Mundelein 7

Outlook: Libertyville needs a road win here to keep at worst a share of the North Suburban Conference lead. Wildcats coach Tim Budge pointed out senior Connor Luxon played football his first two years but not as a junior. He’s now a starting corner “and has made a great impact on our defense,” he said. Matthew Hara is a mirror of Luxon and is starting at nickel now and is one of the Cats’ leading tacklers. Luke Fisher transferred to Libertyville from Stevenson and as a junior has made a great impact on the defensive line, Budge added. Senior Brock Williams has 621 all-purpose yards, including 278 on kickoffs. Jackson Yarc has thrown for 651 yards and six touchdowns. Jacob Syc has 30 tackles (five for loss) and Kaden Butt has three QB sacks. Libertyville’s defense has eight interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Mundelein has lost three in a row after going 3-0, but lost its last two games by a combined 13 points, 27-20 to Stevenson and 15-9 to Lake Zurich.

Montini (4-2) at De La Salle (0-6)

When: Friday 7:30 p.m.

Last week: St. Rita 39, Montini 38; Leo 34, De La Salle 12

Outlook: Through six weeks, the Broncos have played their share of tight games, beating Marist (35-28), Nazareth (47-42), and Carmel (42-35), prior to last week’s nail-biting loss. St. Rita scored a touchdown and the go-ahead two-point conversion with 2:52 remaining. Led by senior quarterback Israel Abrams (24 of 30, 418 yards, three touchdowns), the Broncos generated 464 yards of offense last week. Abrams added a pair of rushing touchdowns. For the season, Abrams has completed 102 of 166 for 1,819 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding nine touchdowns on the ground. Damacio Ortegon leads the team with 30 receptions for 677 yards and nine touchdowns, while Donovan Evans has 18 catches for 437 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Ben Evenson leads the Broncos with 65 tackles, including 10 for losses. Montini coach Mike Bukovsky realizes his team’s defense must improve heading into the final three weeks of the regular season. “As a coaching staff, we need to get back to the drawing board defensively to come up with some answers because we have some things we are struggling with,” said the coach. “As a team, we need to attack these last three games and set the tone for a deep playoff run.”

IC Catholic Prep (6-0) at Benet Academy (2-4)

When: Friday 7:30 p.m.

Last week: IC Catholic Prep 28, St. Laurence 12; Marmion 26, Benet Academy 20

Outlook: The Knights, 6-0 for the first time since 2021, travel to Lisle to face a Benet Academy team stunned by Marmion last weekend. IC Catholic Prep quarterback Nate Lang completed 12 of 22 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, while adding 52 yards rushing with a touchdown last week. Sophomore Jakobe Baldwin continued his stellar season, gaining 77 tough yards on 17 carries with a touchdown, and Jaden Penna caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, linebackers KJ Reese and Jalen Banks collected 10 tackles apiece, while Anthony Carroccio and Donnel Sallis each added interceptions. Quarterback Alex Mitchell threw touchdown passes to Tyler Lakis and Giovanni Sanderlin, and Hawke Lawler’s two-yard touchdown run gave the Redwings a fourth-quarter lead last week before Marmion’s Ryan Loria returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown as time expired for the Cadets’ win.

Bishop McNamara (5-1, 4-0) at Wheaton Academy (6-0, 4-0)

When: Friday 7:30 p.m.

Last week: Bishop McNamara 20, Marian Central Catholic 13; Wheaton Academy 35, Hope Academy 8

Last year: Bishop McNamara 29, Wheaton Academy 14

Outlook: The last two remaining Chicagoland Christian Conference unbeatens collide in West Chicago. Bishop McNamara survived a game effort from Marian Central Catholic last week, escaping with a seven-point victory after being held to its lowest point total since dropping the season opener to Wilmington, 16-7. Senior quarterback Micah Lee has completed 37 of 62 passes for 639 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing 46 times for 311 yards and six touchdowns. Junior running back/linebacker Rhys Landsmann has carried the ball 52 times for 396 yards and five touchdowns while averaging as team-leading nine tackles per game. Defensive lineman Robby Smith leads the squad with five quarterback hurries. The Warriors are off to their first 6-0 start since 1957, led by quarterback Colton Miller and running backs Ethan Brooks and Ryan Siders. Junior strong safety Kaden Larsen recorded an interception against Hope Academy.

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Glenbard North 24, Lake Park 9; Geneva 56, Batavia 49

Last year: Glenbard North 16, Geneva 13

Outlook: Perhaps the toughest task for Vikings coach Boone Thorgesen this week is getting his team prepared to face a formidable foe in Glenbard North on the heels of last weekend’s wild-and-crazy, 56-49 road victory over rival Batavia. Senior Nelson Wendell enjoyed a superb two-way effort, carrying the ball 27 times for a career-high 301 yards and three touchdowns, and recording seven tackles on defense. Wendell took a 49-yard screen pass from quarterback Ben Peterson to the end zone with 1:04 to snap a 49-49 deadlock. Peterson has thrown 22 touchdown passes in six games, while Illinois-bound receiver Bennett Konkey averages 160 receiving yards per game with 13 touchdowns. He will be matched up much of the time against Panthers senior two-way standout Angelo Gatses, who averages 132 yards rushing per game with 10 touchdowns. His 80-yard touchdown run highlighted last week’s win. Junior quarterback Logan Kramer threw a pair of touchdown passes against Lake Park, including a 16-yard, fourth-quarter strike to Cory Truty that sealed the decision. Xavier Smiley anchors the Panthers’ defense.

Lake Park (1-5, 0-4) at St. Charles East (3-3, 1-3)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Glenbard North 24, Lake Park 9; St. Charles North 28, St. Charles East 27

Last year: Lake Park 41, St. Charles East 35

Outlook: Senior quarterback Tay Smith gave the Lancers a first-quarter lead with his two-yard keeper last week before a pair of big plays, including a 40-yard touchdown pass and Angelo Gatses’s 80-yard touchdown run, hurt Lake Park’s defense. The Saints showed their resiliency, rallying from a 28-14 fourth-quarter deficit before falling short against their crosstown rivals last week. Senior tailback Johnny Solano ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns against St. Charles North, while Brady Habas caught three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Cruz Herrera helped spark the Saints’ late comeback last week. “It’s a resilient group,” said Saints coach Nolan Possley. “They’re excited about the opportunities still in front of them.” While the Lancers look to keep their postseason hopes alive, the Saints aim for their fourth win prior to home games against state-ranked Geneva and Batavia.

Batavia (4-2, 3-1) at Wheaton North (5-1, 3-1)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Geneva 56, Batavia 49; WW South 21, Wheaton North 16

Last year: Batavia 28, Wheaton North 7

Outlook: Both teams attempt to put disappointing rivalry losses in the rear-view mirror. Batavia rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit last week, only to fall prey to a 49-yard screen pass that went for a touchdown with 1:04 remaining. Senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren accounted for 497 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns — four passing, three rushing. For the season, the Wyoming commit has completed 77% of his passes (126 of 154) for 1,801 yards and 22 touchdowns, while adding 10 rushing touchdowns. Brennon Zeng (nine touchdowns) and Darin Ashiru (five touchdowns) are the Bulldogs’ leading receivers, while Charlie Rosengren (four touchdowns) anchors the ground game. The Falcons fell behind 21-3 last week before staging a second-half comeback behind sophomore quarterback Grant Neibch, who completed 9 of 12 passes for 93 yards and a 19-yard touchdown strike to Gavin Neiss. Senior running back Mac Murray leads the Falcons’ ground game. Defensively, the Falcons have allowed just 78 points in six games. The most any team has scored on Wheaton North is 21 points — last week. Now, they’ll face a Batavia team that has scored 49 points or more in five of its six games.

Wheaton Warrenville South (4-2, 3-1) at St. Charles North (3-3, 1-3)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: St. Charles North 28, St. Charles East 27; WW South 21, Wheaton North 16

Last year: WW South 33, St. Charles North 7

Outlook: The North Stars withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally from St. Charles East last week, emerging victorious for their first September win this season. Senior tailback Tommy Vendl’s 150 yards and two touchdowns paced the offense, while the 5-foot-9, 182-pounder also saw time late on the defensive side of the ball. “We’re at the point in the season now where we’ve got to play guys both ways,” said North Stars coach Rob Pomazak. “It’s a win-or-go-home scenario.” Senior quarterback Landon Conroy tossed touchdown passes to Jack Leigl and Jackson Weasler, while sophomore quarterback Dash Von Qualen added 66 rushing yards on six carries. Defensively, lineman Braden McPheeters and Aiden Bradley and linebackers Miguel Mendoza and Lucas Krecker anchor North’s defense. The Tigers earned their third conference win in four tries last week, turning back crosstown rival Wheaton North. Junior tailback Malaki Thomas provided a second-half spark with 64 yards and a touchdown, while junior quarterback AJ Rogers completed all seven of his second-half passes. Defensively, nose guard Zach Turner and linebacker Clark Jensen helped limit Falcons back Mac Murray to 33 yards.

Waubonsie Valley (2-4, 1-2) at Metea Valley (2-4, 1-2)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Naperville North 33, Waubonsie Valley 14; Naperville Central 36, Metea Valley 29

Outlook: The DuPage Valley rivals look to snap two-game losing skids. Waubonsie Valley fell behind 33-0 last week before tailback John Hung scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to avoid the shutout. Three weeks ago, Hung enjoyed a four-touchdown performance in a win over DeKalb. Quarterback Nolan Alberson directs the Warriors’ offense. Sophomore Marco Salamanca owns a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 95-yard pick-six this season. Metea Valley aims for its first postseason berth since 2014, led by junior quarterback Iggy Amorrortu, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Charlie Larson and ran for two scores against Naperville Central. Larson, who started at quarterback a year ago, averages 143 receiving yards per contest.

Naperville Central (3-3) at Cardinal Ritter College Prep, Mo. (1-4)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Naperville Central 36, Metea Valley 29; St. James Academy 50, Cardinal Ritter 6

Outlook: The Redhawks head to St. Louis to face a Cardinal Ritter program that captured back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023. The Lions have posted successive nine-win campaigns, so they are unaccustomed to losing seasons. Naperville Central earned its second straight victory last week, rallying past Metea Valley on quarterback Simon Hayes’ 55-yard touchdown pass to Mark Williams in the fourth quarter. The pair also combined for a 40-yard touchdown earlier in the contest. Landon Nelson and Ryan Jacobson added touchdown runs for the Redhawks, while Nelson sealed the decision with a late run for a first down. Cardinal Ritter counters with junior quarterback Kasimir Manczuk III, junior receiver Kenny Robinson, and sophomore back Terrance Jones.

DeKalb (1-5, 0-3) at Naperville North (5-1, 3-0)

When: Friday 7 p.m.

Last week: Neuqua Valley 21, DeKalb 20; Naperville North 33, Waubonsie Valley 14

Outlook: The Barbs dropped a nail-biter to Neuqua Valley despite a solid effort from quarterback Lebron Carrington and running backs Jason Goode and Brandon Williams. Despite their 1-5 record, the Barbs’ point differential is 25. Defense has helped lead the Huskies during their five-game winning streak.
