Man found guilty of murder in Naperville gun sale gone bad

A man has been found guilty of killing another man during a dispute over a gun sale in Naperville.

A DuPage County jury Thursday found Robert Chatman-Jones, 25, of Bellwood, guilty of first-degree murder in the Aug. 29, 2021 death of 18-year-old Coreon Davis, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

Authorities said around 2:11 p.m. that day, Naperville police were called to a parking lot in the 600 block of Amersale Drive for a report of gunshots being fired. They found two .40-caliber shell casings and more than $100 in the lot.

Aurora police officers notified Naperville cops that they had found a car with two gunshot victims at McCoy Drive and Vaughn Road in Aurora. The driver of the car had been shot in a leg.

Davis, who was a passenger, had been shot in the head.

Authorities said Davis had gone to the parking lot to sell a gun to Chatman-Jones. Davis told Chatman-Jones he hadn’t paid enough money. The two struggled, and Chatman-Jones fired a gun, according to authorities. The car Davis was in then drove off.

Chatman-Jones’ attorneys argued in pretrial motions that he acted in self-defense.

A co-defendant, Desire Gray of Aurora, pleaded guilty in April 2025 to aggravated battery and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. She initially was charged with first-degree murder. Authorities said she drove Chatman-Jones to the sale, then drove him to Bellwood, Broadview and the West Side of Chicago after the shooting.

Chatman-Jones’ next court date is Oct. 26. He faces a sentence of 45 years to life in prison.
