York Township offers activities, meals and more to help seniors stay active and connected

From a hot lunch and a game of bingo to fitness classes, transportation, Medicare counseling, and social activities, there is something happening nearly every day for local seniors at the York Township Senior Center in Lombard.

Located at 1502 S. Meyers Road, the Senior Center provides programs and services designed to help residents age 55 or older remain active, independent and connected to their community.

A typical week at the Senior Center can include tai chi, Zumba Gold, line dancing, chair yoga, Yuan Ji Dance, bingo, trivia, movies, knitting, quilting, painting, cards and other activities. Many programs are free or available for a nominal fee, giving seniors opportunities to exercise, learn something new, meet neighbors and simply enjoy time together.

The Senior Center is also home to York Township’s Senior Nutrition Program, where seniors can gather for weekday lunches while enjoying the companionship and community that come with sharing a meal. Weekly programming frequently surrounds the lunch hour, making the Center a place where seniors can spend much of the day participating in activities and visiting with friends.

But York Township’s senior services extend well beyond recreation. The Senior Ride Program, which has served the community since 1976, provides affordable transportation for York Township residents age 55 or older. With five town cars and a wheelchair-accessible passenger bus, the program helps seniors reach medical appointments, grocery stores, shopping destinations and other locations within township boundaries.

Seniors can also receive assistance through programs including SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) counseling for Medicare questions and Benefit Access application assistance. The Senior Center maintains a Medical Lending Closet, offering short-term loans of items such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes and shower benches at no charge, subject to availability.

Additional amenities and programs include free Tuesday movies and popcorn, a library and computer lab, blood pressure screenings, educational seminars, a hair salon, seasonal events and special trips throughout the year.

“Our goal is for every senior in York Township to know that there is a place here for them,” said York Township Supervisor Timothy Murray. “Whether you need a ride to an appointment, have a question about Medicare, want to join us for lunch or are simply looking for somewhere to meet new people and have some fun, we want our Senior Center to be a resource you can count on.”

York Township encourages seniors and their families to explore the many programs available and discover everything the Senior Center has to offer.
