Man punched multiple strangers at Aurora festival, prosecutors say

An Aurora man is accused of punching several strangers at a festival Saturday at an Asian market, including a man who was holding a baby.

Calvin R. Jones, 30, of the 600 block of South River Street, is charged with three counts of aggravated battery in a public place and one count of aggravated battery to a peace officer.

Authorities said police responded about 7:09 p.m. Saturday to the Pacifica Square strip mall at Route 59 and New York Street, which at the time hosting the Moon Festival.

Authorities allege that Jones approached a 15-year-old boy and his twin sister and, without provocation, punched the boy in the mouth, according to DuPage County court documents.

Jones then approached two women standing outside a restaurant, asked them for a cigarette, and when they refused, punched the women in their faces, authorities allege.

As a man was leaving the restaurant with his children and carrying a 1-year-old baby, Jones punched him in the face, according to authorities.

Police found Jones in the parking lot of another mall across New York Street. Authorities say he spit in a police officer’s face and in an eye.

Prosecutors asked for Jones to be held in jail while awaiting trial, but DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden ruled that the charges were non-detainable offenses. He ordered Jones to stay away from the victims and the shopping center, and undergo a psychological evaluation.

Jones’ next court date is Oct. 13.
