Football roundup: Waubonsie Valley, Glenbard East, Glenbard South, St. Edward notch victories

Junior tailback John Hung doubled up on last weekend’s two-touchdown effort against Palatine, scoring four touchdowns during the Warriors’ 34-13 DuPage Valley Conference triumph Friday night in Aurora. Three of Hung’s touchdowns came in the first 16 minutes, as the Warriors (2-2, 1-0) built an early 21-0 lead.

Following the Barbs’ first touchdown, Waubonsie sophomore Marco Salamanca returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score and 27-6 halftime advantage. Hung’s fourth touchdown of the night provided some insurance in the fourth quarter.

Glenbard East 55, Elmwood Park 0: Malachi Miller returned a punt 46 yards for a touchdown and added an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half during the Rams’ Upstate Eight East victory over Elmwood Park (1-3, 0-2). Sophomore quarterback Carter Pohlman added a 67-yard touchdown pass to Mason Wright, as the defending UEC East champion Rams (2-2, 2-0) recorded their second consecutive shutout.

Glenbard South 49, West Chicago 6: Tommy Bauman tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass, and the Raiders (3-1, 2-0) returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns during their Upstate Eight East triumph over West Chicago (1-3, 0-2). Glenbard South’s defense recorded four interceptions. Ian Lemus (11 carries, 55 yards) scored a rushing touchdown for the Wildcats.

St. Edward 40, Christ the King 20: Junior quarterback Jake Linkowski ran for three touchdowns, highlighted by his 40-yard score in the second quarter, as St. Edward (2-2, 1-1) evened its record with Friday’s Chicagoland Christian victory in Elgin. Harper Welsh added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Green Wave, while junior Brandon Wilmot had a 90-yard interception return to set up Linkowski’s four-yard touchdown run.

Wheaton Academy 38, Marian Central Catholic 8: The Warriors improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Chicagoland Christian play, with a road victory over Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock. Quarterback Colton Miller threw touchdown passes to Joseph From and Kaden Larsen, while running for another touchdown. Ryan Siders and Robert Venhuizen each added rushing touchdowns. Defensively, the Warriors continued to shine, as senior linebacker/safety Logan Oros recorded two of the team’s five sacks. Ethan Brooks, Hudsen Hall and Charlie Silas each added a sack. Through four games, Wheaton Academy’s defense has allowed a total of 35 points.

Notre Dame 30, Benet 25: Benet slipped to 2-2 following Friday night’s loss to Notre Dame (3-1) at Benedictine University. Benet trailed 17-6 at halftime as Michael Conway accounted for Benet’s offense with a pair of field goals. The Dons extended the margin to 24-6 before the Redwings mounted a comeback. Zachary Ihde’s short-yardage rushing touchdown and junior quarterback Alex Mitchell’s touchdown pass to Luca Diomede made it 24-19 after three quarters. After the Dons increased the lead to 30-19, Benet answered with a Mitchell to Giovanni Sanderlin touchdown but failed on the two-point try.

Hinsdale South 56, Addison Trail 42: Quarterback Benjamin Miller threw four touchdown passes — three to 5-foot-5 senior receiver Koby Armstrong — while rushing for a pair of touchdowns during the Hornets’ West Suburban Gold victory in Addison. The teams combined for more than 500 yards passing and 96 points — 70 of them in the first half when the Hornets (2-2, 2-0) led 42-28. Blazers junior quarterback Robert Morales enjoyed his second consecutive four-touchdown performance — two of them to junior receiver Jaden Romeus. Junior tailback Michael Clementi added a pair of touchdowns for the Blazers (2-2, 0-2), who have allowed 111 points the past two games.

Lyons Township 38, Hinsdale Central 28: Beau Gatewood connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Beau Knapp and a 58-yard scoring strike to George Zilliox during the Red Devils’ West Suburban Silver setback Friday night in Hinsdale. Matthew Tomfohrde added a two-yard touchdown run for Hinsdale Central (2-2, 0-2).

Cary-Grove 57, McHenry 13: Sophomore running backs Ty Tenopir and Leo Zavala combined for 339 yards on the ground and five touchdowns during the Trojans’ Fox Valley Conference victory. Tenopir, who rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns, added a fourth score on a 24-yard reception of a pass from quarterback Jackson Berndt. Zavala finished with 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as Cary-Grove (3-1, 3-1) recorded its third straight win.

Hampshire 44, Prairie Ridge 20: Griffin Chamberlain completed 11 of 21 passes for 235 yards and five touchdowns, including three to receiver Marquis Thurmand, as Hampshire (2-2, 2-2) evened its record with a 24-point victory over defending Fox Valley champion Prairie Ridge (0-4, 0-4). Thurmand’s touchdown receptions covered 34, 42 and 12 yards, respectively, while Chamberlin also fired a 38-yard scoring strike to Tyler Lacke as the Whip-Purs posted their second win in a row. Ivan Lechuga and Uriah Beamon each recorded interceptions.

Huntley 56, Crystal Lake South 7: Chase Hojnacki rushed for 146 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns during the Red Raiders’ Fox Valley Conference victory. Quarterback Malik Carter finished 12 of 14 for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as Huntley stretched its winning streak to four.

Morris 35, Kaneland 6: Junior quarterback Marion Persich ran for 63 yards and three touchdowns to lift Morris (4-0, 1-0) to the Interstate Eight victory in a battle of unbeatens in Morris. Brody Guthrie completed 14 of 29 passes for 183 yards for the Knights (3-1, 0-1), while receiver Colton Van Dyke caught seven passes for 88 yards.

Elgin 47, Streamwood 20: Ja’Miere Moore’s highlight-reel, 13-yard diving catch of a pass from quarterback Jacob Rufino opened the scoring for the Maroons, who evened their record at 2-2, 2-0 in Upstate Eight West action, with Friday’s home win over Streamwood. The Sabres slipped to 1-3, 0-2.

Aurora Christian 21, Hope Academy 12: Jalen Callaway continued his stellar play with three touchdowns during the Eagles’ 21-12 Chicagoland Christian victory over Hope Academy (2-2, 1-1) Friday night in Aurora. Callaway opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run, then caught a 51-yard screen pass from sophomore quarterback Juju Vasquez.

Dundee-Crown 27, Crystal Lake Central 7: Quarterback Isaac Grzynkowicz had a pair of touchdown runs and threw a four-yard scoring pass to AJ Chrusniak during the Chargers’ Fox Valley Conference victory over Crystal Lake Central (0-4, 0-4). The Chargers are 2-2, 2-2.

Fenton 23, Larkin 8: Junior tailback Robert Green scored on a two-yard touchdown run to help lift the Bison (2-2) to the Upstate Eight crossover victory over Larkin (0-4) in Bensenville.
