Medicaid cuts affect every American

In the September 3 article “Study: Illinois hospitals to lose billions through Medicaid policy change” by Peter Hancock, I learned “Illinois hospitals stand to lose upwards of $4 billion in revenue over the next several years due to changes in Medicaid rules”. What is the source of this reduction? The dreadfully named “Big, Beautiful Bill” passed by Republicans with President Trump’s encouragement.

Hospitals losing funding makes healthcare more expensive for all of us. Healthcare needs do not change even when hospitals receive less money. So they will be providing care as best they can. If a hospital does not get paid for the services it provides, it will cut back services and raise prices for those who are insured to cover costs.

Hospitals will be cutting services for all of us, not just those who cannot pay. We all suffer (and meanwhile we still have a steadily increasing federal deficit).
