Daily Herald Week 4 football previews
Fremd (3-0) at Prospect (3-0)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Prospect 45, Naperville Central 14; Fremd 31, Metea Valley 7
Outlook: This will be a fun one between a pair of unbeaten teams who can score and play good defense. Fremd is averaging 21.5 points per game while averaging nearly 380 yards of offense. Junior Will Clark has stepped in nicely at quarterback, completing 67% of his passes for 768 yards. Carter McDonald, who has 16 catches for 335 yards, and Ben Riddle, who has 11 catches for 203 yards, have been Clark’s favorite targets. The Vikings have allowed just 9 points per game. Prospect comes in with Eastern Illinois commit Jackson Cacini throwing the ball well. Cacini threw for four touchdowns last week to bring his total to seven while running for two scores. Running back Matthew Donnelly has already scored nine times this season while wide receiver Gordon Kemp is coming off of a 107-yard, two-touchdown performance. Not to be left out, the Knights defense has allowed just 31 points.
Maine South (2-1) at New Trier (2-1)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Maine South 41, Maine West 7; New Trier 61; Vernon Hills 0
Last year: Maine South 35, New Trier 7
Outlook: This will be a special Thursday edition of football with two of the top quarterbacks in the area. Maine South’s Jameson Purcell, who is committed to Indiana, has thrown for 696 yards and eight touchdowns despite only playing one quarter last week. New Trier’s Jackie Ryder has been streaking his way up the quarterback charts. Ryder, who is committed to Purdue, has completed 79.5% of his passes for 714 yards and seven touchdowns. New Trier last defeated Maine South in 2016. It was the only conference loss the Hawks have had on the playing field in conference play since 2001.
Barrington (0-3) at Hersey (3-0)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Naperville North 21, Barrington 7; Hersey 49, Neuqua Valley 14
Last year: Barrington 35, Hersey 21
Outlook: A combination of a sluggish offense and tough schedule has left Barrington at 0-3 for the first time since 2001. And it doesn’t look like it will get much easier. Defenses like Naperville North have keyed on running back Lamar Osterhues, holding him to 79 yards, while a tough schedule and other factors have slowed the Broncos. Meanwhile, Hersey is looking to get revenge from last year’s loss. Hersey has been playing much better defense from a year ago. The Huskies have also found their running game to go along with their devastating passing attack. Jackson Travis piled up 165 yards and two touchdowns in just the first half last week while Kentucky-bound Jake Nawrot threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns.
Elk Grove (2-1) at Hoffman Estates (1-2)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Conant 21, Elk Grove 0; Hoffman Estates 33, Rolling Meadows 19
Outlook: Both teams had firsts last week as Elk Grove lost its last game and Hoffman picked up its first win. Elk Grove struggled to not just get the ball against Conant, but the Grenadiers had difficulty executing when they had it. That was very much opposite of their two wins when the Grens outscored their opponents 48-6 thanks to the play of quarterback Luke Maher and running back Erik Sandoval. Hoffman, which was outscored 43-20 in its first two games, turned its play around 180 degrees. The Hawks got their running game going behind their veteran offensive line and sprang junior Riley Lennert for 256 yards and two touchdowns. With the running game going well, the Hawks also took to the air with Shion Dailey throwing a pair of touchdown passes.
Palatine (1-2) at Rolling Meadows (1-2)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Waubonsie Valley 28, Palatine 21; Hoffman Estates 33, Rolling Meadows 19
Last year: Palatine 39, Rolling Meadows 22
Outlook: After a great opening afternoon win over Kenwood, Palatine has lost its last two games by a total of eight points. The Pirates had difficulty running the ball last week, rushing for 56 yards. They were picked off three times. Despite that, the Pirates were still in the game thanks to a pair of touchdown passes by Brandon Martino and an interception return by Jhonathan Herndez. Rolling Meadows had interception issues as well last week, with three of their own. But the Mustangs have run the ball very well all season and piled up 184 yards on the ground. Luke Harvey was the leader again for Meadows and has rushed for 477 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Deerfield (2-1) at Maine West (0-3)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Deerfield 41. Niles West 7; Maine South 41; Maine West 7;
Outlook: Maine West is off to a poor start, losing its first three games for the first time since 2012. Maine West has played a tough schedule with opponents having a record of 7-2. The Warriors will be looking to get their offense, led by quarterback Wyatt Roux, running back Zaire Domino and wide receiver Davion Tate, back in gear after being handcuffed last week by Maine South. Deerfield and Maine West have not met since 2022 in a game won by Deerfield.
Leyden (1-2) at York (2-1)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Willowbrook 26, Leyden 9; York 38, Proviso West 0
Last year: York 56, Leyden 0
Outlook: Leyden had a great opener, but the Eagles have landed hard the last two weeks. Leyden’s offense has had trouble getting off the ground during that span, scoring just three points. Nehemiah Almodovar has been a focal point of the Eagles offense in both rushing and catching the ball. York bounced back last week after losing to Nazareth Academy in Week 2.
Conant (3-0) at Buffalo Grove (3-0)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Conant 21, Elk Grove 0; Buffalo Grove 49, Schaumburg 7
Outlook: Conant has not been 4-0 since 2022 while Buffalo Grove has not reached that point since 2021. Someone will get there in a battle of a pair of teams who like to run the ball. A lot. Conant threw just two passes last week and has only thrown 11 all season. But the Cougars have a solid stable of running backs in Ivan Haralanov, Anthony Burns and Jackson Spizzirri, and don’t forget quarterback Tyler Marchese. Buffalo Grove leans hard on just one running back, and Matthew Kaput leans back even harder. The senior has rushed for 485 yards and eight touchdowns. Nathan Raef has kept opponents honest, throwing to Matt Hong and Jaleel Marshall.
Wheeling (0-3) at Schaumburg (0-3)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Rochelle 40; Wheeling 0; Buffalo Grove 49; Schaumburg 7
Outlook: Somebody will pick up their first win. Both teams have played well in spots this year. Wheeling’s Anthony Alvarado has played well at quarterback and has the Wildcats’ lone touchdown. Evan Watanuki, David Garcia and Bennett Rasar lead the defense. Schaumburg opened the season with a pair of close losses, but injuries and a solid Buffalo Grove team limited the Saxons to just 35 rushing yards. Dylan Ramirez did throw for 134 yards and a touchdown to Tommy Podolek, who had 111 receiving yards.
Highland Park (1-2) at Maine East (0-3)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Highland Park 42, Glenbrook North 7; Evanston 56; Maine East 0
Last year: Highland Park 49, Maine East 0
Outlook: Maine East is hoping to get things moving forward after dropping its first three games of the season. The Demons have struggled on both sides of the ball, scoring just one touchdown while allowing 50 points per game. They take on a Highland Park team that picked up its first win of the season last week.
St. Viator (0-3, 0-0) at Leo (2-1)
When: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Last week: Notre Dame 21, St. Viator 0; Benet 17; Leo 14
Outlook: It is a battle of the Lions as Viator travels to 79th and Sangamon to take on a Leo team that has already equaled its win total from last season. St. Viator is looking to turn things around in its Red Division opener and this could be an opportunity to do that. Junior Danny Traver stepped up quite nicely last week at quarterback and was 7-of-13 passing for 71 yards in one half.
Antioch (3-0, 1-0) at Grayslake Central (2-1, 1-0)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Antioch 35, Grant 28; Grayslake Central 57, Round Lake 26
Last year: Antioch 47, Grayslake Central 0
Outlook: Our Lake County Blue Plate Special of the Week. Antioch, ranked 10th in the state in the Class 5A Illinois Media poll, played another competitive game with Grant last week. “Grayslake Central is definitely an up-and-coming program,” Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. Defensively, Glashagel noted Antioch defensive ends Willie Hamilton and Harrison Victor make things difficult for offenses. Defensive back Jordan Bustamante earned the team’s defensive player of the week honor last week. … Antioch has won the special teams phase the first three weeks, recovering two onside kicks, and punting and covering kicks well. … Central’s Ken-Ye Pendleton had a historic night against Round Lake, rushing for 267 yards on 14 carries and tied a school record with 5 touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 10, 34, 58, 19 and 37 yards. “Ken-Ye was explosive all night and he consistently made big plays when we needed them,” Rams coach Brent Pitt said. … Ray Ray Wright ran 18 times for 180 yards and two scores, including a 62-yard touchdown run. Pendleton and Wright combined to rush for 447 yards and eight touchdowns. “Our offensive line played extremely physical and created the opportunities for Ken-Ye and Ray Ray to make those plays,” said Pitt, who also likes the team’s progress on defense. “We have shown we can make plays, but we need to become more consistent,” he said.
Lakes (1-2, 0-1) at Grant Community (1-2, 0-1)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Grant, which lost a one-score game to Antioch last week, ran for 425 yards in Week 2 and 295 yards against the Sequoits. “I like that our young offensive line is improving each week,” Grant coach Tim Norwood said. Junior tailback Doltyn Longtin ran for 182 yards on 34 carries and scored two touchdowns against Antioch, while senior linebackers Wyatt Cornell (12 tackles) and Logan Hamm (nine tackles) were defensive standouts. “Wyatt and Logan are always around the ball,” Norwood said.
North Chicago (1-2, 0-1) at Wauconda (3-0, 1-0)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Wauconda 20, Lakes 7; Grayslake North 41, North Chicago 13
Last year: Wauconda 47, North Chicago 6
Outlook: Wauconda has converted 60% of its fourth-down attempts this season … The Bulldogs defense has five quarterback sacks through three games with three belonging to Brody Drozd …. In last week’s Lakes win, Cashton Silton had 10 tackles, while Brody Rudolph ran for 103 yards and had 47 receiving yards … Brian Hart had six tackles on defense and a rushing touchdown on offense, while Luke Sickmeir had a receiving touchdown and an interception ….Wauconda coach Chris Prostka said the coaching staff has been thrilled with the development and play of Jarren Cooley on defense. “Combining his preparation with his physical skills has led to a great start to the season,” Prostka said. In his last two games, Gabe Tuttle registered 13 tackles.
Carmel Catholic (2-1) at Providence Catholic (3-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.; Providence Catholic New Lenox
Last week: Carmel 21, St. Laurence 14; Providence 27, Joliet Catholic 0
Last year: Providence 35, Carmel 28
Outlook: The Corsairs, ranked seventh in the state in Class 6A, hit the road to south suburban New Lenox to take on a Providence team that finished second in the state in Class 5A a year ago. “It’s always tough to go down to New Lenox and play a great program with a strong tradition in the Chicago Catholic League like Providence,” Carmel defensive coordinator Billy Moore said. … Carmel’s Jorden Moore had 85 all-purpose yards in the team’s Week 3 win, while Jaquel Edmonds returned a kick 90 yards to open the game … Jameer Miles had 10 tackles (two for loss), while defensive linemen Kristian Chadick (eight tackles), Noah Breckenridge (eight tackles) and Drew Moulton (seven tackles) had solid nights against a stout St. Laurence offensive line … Moore noted junior linebacker Anthony Ingolia had two sacks on St. Laurence’s final two plays … Moore added Michael Herman, a junior who played linebacker last year, has been a bright spot at safety. Edmonds is averaging seven yards per carry (210 yards on 30 carries), while Moore is just under seven yards (33 carries, 218 yards) … Breckenridge (23 tackles) and Chadick (19 tackles) are two returning starters on the defensive line.
Warren (0-3, 0-1) at Mundelein (3-0, 1-0)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Libertyville 21, Warren 6; Mundelein 44, Waukegan 6
Last year: Warren 58, Mundelein 13
Outlook: Mundelein is looking for its first 4-0 start since the 2023 team. “We know Mundelein is 3-0 and we are 0-3, first off,” Warren coach Bryan McNulty said. “In order to have success we need to finish, especially offensively. We beat our Week 3 opponent in almost every statistical category except the one that matters. Mundelein will not beat themselves.” Warren junior tailback Johnny Randolph ran for 124 yards on 26 carries last week. McNulty said junior defensive lineman Kaden Millbrooks continues to dominate. “He is a big-time Division I kid who is strong and relentless,” he said, adding sophomore linebacker Levi Jacques has stepped up in a role new to him and was extremely consistent against Libertyville, while defensive back Noah Vieux had a big game last week at free safety. Mundelein is looking for its first winning season since 2002.
Libertyville (1-2, 1-0) at Lake Forest (0-3, 0-1)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Libertyville 21, Warren 6; Zion 32, Lake Forest 16

Outlook: Libertyville coach Tim Budge is not letting Lake Forest’s 0-3 start cloud any judgments. “They are tough defensively,” he said. “On offense, they want to establish their zone run game.” Kaden Butt had 13 tackles and a pick-six in last week’s win against Warren. Budge added Jacob Syc plays much of the game on defense and on offense as a guard. Matthew Hara had a tackle on fourth down that stalled one of Warren’s drives inside the 10-yard line, while Reid Williams is leading the Wildcats secondary and “gets us in the right calls on a consistent basis,” Budge said. Libertyville quarterback Jackson Yarc has thrown for 396 yards and two touchdowns.
Stevenson (0-3, 0-1) at Zion-Benton (3-0, 1-0)
When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Lake Zurich 17, Stevenson 14; Zion 32, Lake Forest 16
Last year: Stevenson 40, Zion 21
Outlook: Stevenson looks to get into the win column against a Zion team that also started out 3-0 a year ago but then lost four games in a row before winning its season finale. Stevenson has played three opponents with a combined 7-2 mark thus far, while Zion’s first three foes registered a combined 1-8 record through the first three weeks.
Lakes (1-2, 0-1) at Grant Community (1-2, 0-1)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

They also are physical on defense.” Last week against Wauconda, senior quarterback Ethan Gialo ran for a team-high 54 yards, while junior wideout Julies Perez had a 48-yard touchdown catch, and senior linebacker Robbie Siebert led the team with 11 tackles. Senior defensive lineman Nick Green leads Lakes with 11 tackles for loss, while Siebert is the team’s tackles leader. Senior defensive back AJ Perna has a team-high three pass breakups.
Grayslake North (3-0, 1-0) at Round Lake (2-1, 0-1)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Grayslake North 41, North Chicago 13; Grayslake Central 57, Round Lake 26

Outlook: A battle of two improved teams. North is one of three 3-0 Northern Lake County Conference squads with Antioch and Wauconda. “Grayslake North is 3-0 and they move the ball well,” Round Lake coach Randi Dey said. “They have a versatile quarterback that we are going to have to account for at all times.” Devin Powell (11 catches, 298 yards, three touchdowns) and Evan West (18-for-37, 354 yards, four touchdowns, 2 interceptions) continue to impress for Round Lake on offense, while Dey noted Tyree Henderson and Jayden Jean Baptiste have both “been stepping it up for us big time,” he said…. Linebackers Riley Nelson and Beckett Dovel are tied for the North team lead in tackles, while defensive back Brenyn Villanueva has had a good nose for the ball with two picks and a fumble recovery, coach Brian Johnson said. Knights quarterback Jaylen Newkirk has passed for 449 yards and eight scores, while Jaden Kelly has 251 rushing yards on 36 carries and three touchdowns. Newkirk has completed touchdown passes to four different receivers (Luc Woyat, Alejandro Romero, Finn McMahon and Brooklyn Washington).
Montini (2-1) at Nazareth (1-2)
When: Friday 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Montini 35, Marist 28; Mt. Carmel 35, Nazareth 7
Outlook: After having their 25-game winning streak snapped against Sandburg a week earlier, the Broncos posted an impressive road victory against Class 8A foe Marist last weekend. Dual-threat senior quarterback Izzy Abrams has completed 37 of 72 passes for 675 yards and eight touchdowns, while adding three rushing touchdowns. Abrams threw for three touchdowns against Marist. Senior Damacio Ortegon (11 receptions, 219 yards, three touchdowns) is Abrams’ favorite target. Linebacker Ben Evenson leads the Broncos with 29 tackles. Nazareth, coming off a loss to perennial powerhouse Mt. Carmel last week, features junior quarterback JJ Chapman, receiver Jackson Flickinger, running back Charles Calhoun, and tight end Hank Sakalas.
St. Francis (1-2) at St. Rita (1-2)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Brother Rice 43, St. Francis 0; Loyola 31, St. Rita 0
Last year: St. Francis 17, St. Rita 10
Outlook: Both teams suffered rough losses last weekend against perennial powers. The Spartans, who lost starting quarterback Jadon Wilson to an injury in their season opener, are led by senior tailback Tivias Caldwell, who recently received an offer from Wisconsin-Whitewater. Caldwell averages 77 yards rushing and has scored a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, sophomore Gio Alvarez leads the team with nine tackles per game, supported by sophomore defensive lineman Taj Evans (two sacks) and senior safety James McGrath (seven tackles per game). St. Rita, blanked by Loyola last weekend, features senior quarterback John Fennell (111 rushing yards per game), senior tailback Brandon Johnson, Jr. (four touchdowns), and junior receiver TJ Burgos (97 receiving yards per game, two touchdowns).
Niles Notre Dame (2-1) vs. Benet Academy (2-1)
Where: Benedictine University
When: Friday 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Niles Notre Dame 21, St. Viator 0; Benet Academy 17, Leo 14
Outlook: Benet plays a “home” game across the street at Benedictine University while its new stadium/field is completed. The Redwings got off to a fast start last weekend, jumping out to a 17-0 lead before hanging on for their second win. Donovan Wells provided a big special teams play with his recovery of a high snap on a punt in the end zone for a touchdown, while Hawke Lawler added a short-yardage rushing score against Leo. Senior quarterback Eric Couper has completed 80 percent of his passes with four touchdowns for the Dons, supported by senior receiver Peter Panagiotopoulos (142-yard average, two touchdowns), and junior tailback Christopher Love (four touchdowns).
DePaul College Prep (2-1) at IC Catholic Prep (3-0)
When: Friday 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Fenwick 38, DePaul College Prep 14; IC Catholic Prep 22, St. Ignatius 15
Outlook: The Rams gave defending Class 6A state champion Fenwick all it could handle for 2 ½ quarters last week before being outscored 28-0 over the final 16 minutes. Junior tailback Tyson Hooks tallied both the Rams’ touchdowns, highlighted by his 23-yard run, while defensive lineman Pete Zuvich snuffed a Fenwick drive with a second-quarter interception in the red zone. The Knights rallied past previously unbeaten St. Ignatius last weekend, as junior Grant Bowen’s late interception set up Jakobe Baldwin’s 27-yard, go-ahead touchdown. Baldwin finished with 143 yards on 13 carries. Senior quarterback Nate Lang (16 of 24, 210 yards) tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Jaden Penna.
Wheaton Academy (3-0, 1-0) at Marian Central Catholic (1-2, 0-1)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Wheaton Academy 28, Chicago Christian 7; Hope Academy 36, Marian Central Catholic 20
Last year: Wheaton Academy 42, Marian Central Catholic 28
Outlook: The Warriors bring their unbeaten record to Woodstock, where they’ll face a Marian team that has dropped back-to-back games. Quarterback Colton Miller tossed touchdown passes to Tommy Sommer and Joseph From, while adding a touchdown run in their victory over Chicago Christian. Eli Cherry (interception) and Hudsen Hall (fumble recovery) forced turnovers. Hurricanes senior quarterback Colin Hernon scored a pair of touchdowns, including a 75-yard run, while throwing a 23-yard scoring strike to Colton Riffe in last week’s loss to Hope. Trailing 16-12 after three quarters, the Hurricanes were outscored 20-8 in the fourth quarter.
Glenbard North (2-1, 0-1) at St. Charles East (2-1, 0-1)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Batavia 49, Glenbard North 21; Wheaton Warrenville South 38, St. Charles East 7
Last year: Glenbard North 42, St. Charles East 13
Outlook: Both teams head into this DuKane showdown trying to pick up the pieces following conference-opening setbacks last weekend. Panthers senior tailback Angelo Gatses, who has scored eight touchdowns in three games, found the end zone twice against Batavia. Junior quarterback Logan Kramer directs the Panthers’ offense that includes speedy receiver Pierre Portis. The Saints dug themselves an early 24-0 hole against Wheaton Warrenville South. Junior quarterback Cruz Herrera, who tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bradley (six catches, 60 yards) for the lone score, is off to a solid start. Senior safety Aiden Coyne provided a defensive highlight with an interception. “We’re 2-1, so now we’re going to really find out who we are after battling some adversity here,” said Saints coach Nolan Possley.
Lake Park (1-2, 0-1) at Batavia (2-1, 1-0)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Wheaton North 24, Lake Park 15; Batavia 49, Glenbard North 21
Last year: Batavia 42, Lake Park 21
Outlook: Lake Park couldn’t find a way to overcome four interceptions last week. Senior quarterback Tay’Sean Smith accounted for 268 all-purpose yards while juniors Matthew Grinvalds and Alexander Gavrylyuk each had touchdown runs. Junior receiver Drew D’Alessandro caught 11 passes for 90 yards last week. Batavia bounced back from its Week 2 loss to Rochester, as senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren enjoyed a near-perfect performance. The Wyoming commit completed 16 of 18 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 101 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries against previously unbeaten Glenbard North. Defensively, the Bulldogs are led by linebacker Gavin McKelvie, who collected a game-high 14 tackles, including three for loss, a sack, and five quarterback pressures against Glenbard North.
Wheaton North (3-0, 1-0) at St. Charles North (2-1, 0-1)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Wheaton North 22, Lake Park 15; Geneva 49, St. Charles North 17
Last year: St. Charles North 34, Wheaton North 12
Outlook: The Falcons are off to their first 3-0 start since 2022, led by a stingy defense that has allowed just 28 points in three games. Senior linebacker Sam Bellini anchors the defense, while senior quarterback Burke Neibch directs the offense. Running backs Mac Murray and Blake Melin have provided some punch around the goal line, while receiver Adam Schilling is a top target. After back-to-back victories to open the season, the North Stars struggled on both sides of the ball last week. Senior tailback Tommy Vendl (nine carries, 129 yards) provided a bright spot with his 71-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, while sophomore quarterback Dash Von Qualen added 88 rushing yards.
Geneva (2-1, 1-0) at Wheaton Warrenville South (2-1, 1-0)
When: Friday 7 p.m.

Outlook: The teams head into the weekend with a burst of momentum gathered during impressive DuKane openers. Geneva quarterback Ben Peterson completed 18 of 21 for 341 yards and five touchdowns last week. Peterson threw scoring passes to four different receivers, including Illinois commit Bennett Konkey (six receptions, 179 yards, two touchdowns), David Austin, Luke Ignoffo, and Lincoln Mercado. Senior two-way standout Nelson Wendell added 95 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns, while also recording an interception on defense. Konkey, who averages 194 receiving yards per contest, has scored nine touchdowns in three games. The Tigers counter with a formidable passing game of their own, as junior quarterback AJ Rogers threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns last week. Blake Ittersagen, Steven Harvey, and tight end Jacob Bellows are solid receivers, while two-way threat Clark Jensen and Trent Simpson handle rushing duties.

Senior tailback Brandon Williams, who averages 65 yards per game, had a 20-yard touchdown run to put the Barbs on the board. Waubonsie Valley recorded its first win last week, as a pick-six in the final two minutes provided the difference against Palatine. John Hung added a pair of short-yardage rushing touchdowns for the Warriors, who hope for a triumphant return to DuPage Valley play.
Naperville Central (1-2) vs. Naperville North (2-1)

Naperville North’s defense recorded four interceptions – three by junior linebacker Jake Brooks – against Barrington last week. Junior tailback Jayke Collins rushed for 103 yards on 26 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while quarterback Dante Colasante finished 14 of 26 for 166 yards. Jack Zitko averages 73 receiving yards per contest for the Redhawks. Both squads return to the DuPage Valley Conference, where they battled throughout most of their history.

Outlook: How much did either team learn – and gain – from disappointing double-digit losses against Mid-Suburban powers last week? Metea Valley grabbed a 7-0 lead over Fremd on quarterback Iggy Amorrortu’s 11-yard keeper, only to allow 31 unanswered points the rest of the way. Playing on the first game on its new artificial turf field, Neuqua Valley fell behind early against quarterback Jake Nawrot’s Hersey squad and never recovered. Senior quarterback Drake Mennecke scored on a 31-yard run for the Wildcats, while also throwing as 10-yard touchdown pass to Josh Repmann (six catches, 69 yards). The Wildcats have posted 17 consecutive double-digit victories against Metea Valley.
Larkin (0-3) at Fenton (1-2)

Defensively, the Rams received strong efforts from linebackers Asheco Triplett, Jr., Austin Siebert, and defensive end Syncere Fox. Mishun Williams added a short-yardage touchdown run. Elmwood Park junior quarterback Tommy Dyra tossed a touchdown pass to Michael Murphy, while Jakob Solis added a touchdown run against East Aurora last week.

Junior tailback Bobby Elizondo has enjoyed a strong start to the season, averaging more than 100 yards per contest. The Raiders spotted Ridgewood a 7-0 lead before outscoring them 61-6 the rest of the way. Quarterback Tommy Bauman connected with Anthony Baldauf on a 58-yard touchdown pass, while junior tailback Elijah Donahue sealed the decision with second-half touchdown runs of 34 and 63 yards, respectively. The Raiders’ defense also recorded a pair of interceptions.

Blazers junior two-way standout Michael Clementi ran for 109 yards on 12 carries, and caught nine passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns against Downers Grove South. Despite throwing a pair of costly interceptions, junior quarterback Robert Morales finished 24 of 42 for 363 yards and four touchdowns. Junior receiver Jaden Romeus added six receptions for 122 yards and a pair of TDs. The Blazers’ defense allowed 322 rushing yards to Mustangs senior Forest Bates.

Quarterback James Sobkowiak completed 11 of 21 passes for 161 yards, highlighted by his 53-yard touchdown strike to Nathan Thurston (three catches, 104 yards). The Warriors overcame a 9-7 deficit early in the third quarter against Leyden before finishing with 17 unanswered points. Quarterback Carter Holland threw a pair of touchdown passes, while backup Jax Dyers raced 69 yards for a score. Dionel Rocha’s three-yard touchdown run sealed the deal. A victory would leave Willowbrook in prime position to challenge for the West Suburban Gold title.

The Hilltoppers rebounded from their Week 2 overtime loss to St. Rita with a come-from-behind win over Oak Park-River Forest in their conference opener. Ace Harris ran for a pair of touchdowns, while multi-purpose threat Brady Johnson caught a touchdown pass from quarterback AJ Rayford, and ran for a short-yardage score last week. Downers Grove North remained unbeaten by blanking previously unbeaten Hinsdale Central behind 6-4, 230-pound senior end Jacob Vroman and a defense that limited the Red Devils to five yards rushing. Junior tailback Grant Georgas topped the 100-yard mark and tallied three touchdowns. The teams have split their last six meetings dating back to 2021.

Sophomore Jack Williams opened last week’s win with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and added scoring runs of 57 and 58 yards, respectively. Senior EJ Kuhlman provides a one-two punch in the offensive backfield, while senior quarterback Brendan McCabe leads the attack. The Red Devils’ 2-0 start came to a halt, as they managed just five rushing yards against Downers Grove North. Quarterback Beau Gatewood looks to get the Red Devils back on track. Hinsdale snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with last year’s narrow win.

Junior Collins Miles and sophomore Jack Paige have fumble recoveries for the Lions. Like Lisle, Peotone fields a young squad, anchored by sophomore quarterback Alex Chenoweth and his twin brother/running back Eli Chenoweth. The Blue Devils’ tightly bunched offense includes running back/receiver Nick Cronin.

Outlook: The Cadets have received solid play from senior wide receiver-turned-quarterback Colin McEniry due to an early season injury to sophomore Andrew Saltijeral. McEniry tossed a touchdown pass to Ryan Loria, and ran for a score during last weekend’s victory over DeLaSalle. The Cadets’ defense faces a stern test Friday night, as the unbeaten Shamrocks are averaging 51 points per game. Senior Gavin Gardiner has thrown eight touchdown passes, while junior receiver AJ Henning averages 95 yards per contest. Senior tailback Jayden Miranda averages 147 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.

The Hawks’ defense, which picked off a pair of passes against Elgin, faces a West Aurora squad fresh from a 49-point barrage while pocketing its first win of the season. Senior tailback Bryce Riley averages 153 yards rushing per game with eight touchdowns.

South Elgin rebounded nicely from its 56-21 Week 2 loss to St. Charles North with a shutout victory over Larkin. Senior southpaw Carter McDonald directs the Storm attack, while senior linebacker Patrick Delk paces the defense.

Elgin, fresh from its first win of the season, features quarterback Jacob Rufino (two touchdown passes), running back Anthony Foster (83-yard average, two TDs), and senior linebacker Noah Coleman (team-high 11.5 tackles per game).

He followed with a pair of 70-yard-plus touchdown runs last week. The Eagles, who have outscored their last two foes 102-0, are looking for their first 4-0 start since 2018. Hope Academy receiver Zion Penn’s fourth-down touchdown catch – his second of the game - helped seal last weekend’s home victory. Maurtice Mitchell added a short-yardage touchdown run for the Eagles.
Christ the King (1-2, 0-1) at St. Edward (1-2, 0-1)

Sophomore quarterback Antion Grant has thrown two touchdown passes and rushed for a pair of scores in the first three games, while senior receiver Lavonte Winfield is a deep threat. St. Edward has been outscored 95-8 in its last two games after a 36-6 season-opening victory over Walther Christian. Junior quarterback/cornerback Jake Linkowski directs the Green Wave offense.
Jacobs (3-0, 3-0) at Burlington Central (2-1, 2-1)

Outlook: Led by junior quarterback Austin Stennett, the Golden Eagles are flying high this season. Stennett tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Steve Shower (76 yards) and Jack Coates (41 yards), as they recorded their first win over Prairie Ridge since 2022. Jacobs’ four-game winning streak against Burlington Central ended a year ago. Burlington Central pushed Cary-Grove to the limit before falling short last weekend. Rockets quarterback Reece Beemer completed 12 of 22 passes for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns with an interception. Wagner Viebrock (five catches, 96 yards, TD) and Parker Auxier (75 yards rushing, TD) form a solid 1-2 offensive punch for the Rockets. After just three weeks, Jacobs and Huntley are the lone unbeaten teams in the Fox Valley.
Cary-Grove (2-1, 2-1) at McHenry (2-1, 2-1)

Outlook: Since dropping their season opener to Jacobs, the Trojans have put together a pair of impressive performances during victories over defending Fox Valley champion Prairie Ridge and 2025 playoff qualifier Burlington Central in back-to-back weeks. Three of junior quarterback Jackson Berndt’s four passes went for touchdowns last week. Fullback Luke Cerasa’s three-yard touchdown run with four minutes remaining capped a 78-yard drive that gave Cary-Grove a little breathing room against Burlington Central. McHenry is led by senior quarterback Jayden Linderman (five touchdown passes) and tailback Mick Reidy (87-yard rushing average). Neither team can afford a loss in the FVC title chase with Jacobs and Huntley each at 3-0.
Dundee-Crown (1-2, 0-1) at Crystal Lake Central (0-3, 0-3)

Against Huntley, younger players like quarterback Keaire Lindstroem and tailbacks Tyrese Lemon and Cesar-Isaiah Rodriguez got an opportunity for game action late. Two of the Tigers’ three losses have come by a total of nine points, including their season-opening, 19-13 loss to McHenry. Senior quarterback Evan McMahon and running back Nathan Kozlowski are the Tigers’ offensive leaders.
Hampshire (1-2, 1-2) at Prairie Ridge (0-3, 0-3)

Sophomores Maddux Fawcett and Jack Wetzel support Hampshire’s offense. Prairie Ridge finds itself in unfamiliar territory at 0-3 following last weekend’s loss. Owen Satterlee took over the quarterbacking duties in week two against Cary-Grove. The Wolves have not finished with four losses in a season since 2014, and have qualified for postseason play every year since 2012.
Crystal Lake South (1-2, 1-2) at Huntley (3-0, 3-0)

Outlook: There is not a team in the state playing any better football than Huntley. Offensively, the Red Raiders have scored 162 points in three games, topping the 50-point mark twice. Defensively, they have not allowed a point over their first 12 quarters. Last week, Rylan Thompson recorded a 52-yard interception for a touchdown, while Langston Stanley added a 39-yard TD run. Since knocking off defending Fox Valley champion Prairie Ridge in the season opener, Crystal Lake South has been outscored 76-14 in losses to Burlington Central and McHenry. Hector Del Bosque carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards and the Gators’ lone touchdown last weekend, while receiver Yeidan Ramirez had three catches for 64 yards. Sophomore middle linebacker Santiago Hernandez recorded a team-high eight tackles against McHenry.
Kaneland (3-0) at Morris (3-0)

Outlook: It is the battle of unbeatens in the Interstate Eight Conference. Two-way standout Jackson Little made eight tackles, including a pair for losses, and rushed for two touchdowns against DeKalb last week. Little averages 163 yards rushing per game. Quarterback Brody Guthrie added a pair of touchdown passes, including a 36-yard strike to Blake Aversa. This has been a one-sided rivalry lately, as the Knights’ last win over Morris was in 2018. Morris junior dual-threat quarterback Marion Persich averages 140 yards rushing with seven rushing touchdowns and five passing touchdowns. Persich, a 6-foot-2, 215-pounder, is in his first season at Morris after transferring from LaSalle-Peru. Defensively, junior linebacker Kian Shannon averages seven tackles, while defensive back Logan Conroy has a pair of interceptions. Morris has topped the 30-point mark in its last six meetings with Kaneland.
Alton Marquette (2-1) at Aurora Central Catholic (0-3)
