Football roundup: Montini, Batavia get back on track

Montini 35, Marist 28: Broncos senior quarterback Izzy Abrams scored on a nine-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to lead Montini (2-1) to a 35-28 road win over previously unbeaten Marist Friday night in Chicago. Abrams finished the game 12 of 23 passing for 252 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while also leading the Broncos with 44 rushing yards on nine carries.

Receivers Donovan Evans, Damacio Ortegon, Luca Florio, Eddie Kowalczyk, and Daniel Sago contributed to the Broncos’ 344-yard offensive output and made several key defensive plays down the stretch, as the sweltering conditions forced coach Mike Bukovsky to go a little deeper on the depth chart. Evans caught a pair of touchdown passes from Abrams, as Montini raced to a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Johnny Louise paced the defense with 13 tackles.

“Winning a road game against any CCL opponent is a chore, and I was very pleased with our overall preparation and resiliency to bounce back from a tough loss last week,” said Bukovsky.

Batavia 49, Glenbard North 21: Batavia shook off its Week 2 loss to Rochester in a big way. Senior quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren, a Wyoming commit, passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more scores, as the defending DuKane champions recorded their third victory in two seasons over the Panthers.

Wheaton Academy 28, Chicago Christian 7: Colton Miller passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another. At halftime, the game was tied at 7-all before the Warriors (3-0, 1-0) outscored Chicago Christian 21-0 the rest of the way.

After several big stops by the Warriors’ defense, the offense finally found its groove, punching in three second-half scores. Tommy Sommer and Joseph From caught touchdown passes from Miller, while Ethan Brooks added a rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Eli Cherry had an interception, and Hudsen Hall recovered a fumble that was jarred loose by teammate Tyson Cavin. Cavin also secured the Warriors’ 19-16 win over LaSalle-Peru a week ago with a forced fumble.

McHenry 35, Crystal Lake South 7: Hector Del Bosque tallied the Gators’ lone touchdown in the third quarter during their 35-7 Fox Valley Conference loss Friday.

Senior quarterback Michael Silvius completed eight of 16 passes for 84 yards for the Gators (1-2, 1-2), while junior receiver Yeidan Ramirez caught three passes for 64 yards.

Del Bosque finished with 51 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Marmion 25, DeLaSalle 6: Colin McEniry scored on a two-yard quarterback keeper early in the fourth quarter, while junior tailback Luke Wilde added a six-yard touchdown to help lift Marmion (2-1). McEniry also threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Loria.

Kaneland 42, DeKalb 20: Quarterback Brody Guthrie completed a pair of touchdown passes, while tailback Jackson Little added a pair of touchdown runs, as the Knights improved to 3-0.

After falling behind 20-14 early in the third quarter, Little’s six-yard touchdown run gave Kaneland the lead for good at 21-20. His second touchdown of the night extended the margin to 28-20 before Guthrie connected with Blake Aversa on a 36-yard touchdown pass for an insurance score.

Tommy Boryc added a 55-yard touchdown run for the Knights.

Jacobs 35, Prairie Ridge 14: Jacobs quarterback Austin Stennett passed for a pair of touchdowns and added a six-yard rushing score Friday night in Algonquin.

Stennett connected with Steve Shower for a 76-yard touchdown pass, and hit Jack Coates for a 41-yard score, as the Golden Eagles improved to 3-0, 3-0.

It marked Jacobs’ first win over defending conference champion Prairie Ridge (0-3) since 2022.

Brother Rice 43, St. Francis 0: Jameson Davis scored three rushing touchdowns to help lift Brother Rice (2-1) Friday night in Chicago. Ayden Yarbrough contributed a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Crusaders. With the loss, the Spartans are now 1-2.

West Aurora 49, Streamwood 21: Senior Bryce Riley accounted for 248 all-purpose yards. Riley, who finished with 144 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 10 carries, provided another highlight with an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Junior teammate Michael Williams rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, as the Blackhawks (1-2, 1-0) posted their first victory of the season.

Defensively, linebacker Braden Fraus collected a game-high 10 tackles, while defensive lineman Kenneth Nwalie added eight tackles.

Justin Brown had a 27-yard touchdown run for the Sabres (1-2, 0-1).

Hampshire 22, Crystal Lake Central 19: Trailing 19-15, Hampshire (1-2, 1-2) staged a fourth-quarter comeback Friday vs. Crystal Lake Central (0-3, 0-3).

Quarterback Griffin Chamberlain completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Karwacki on a fourth-and-goal play for the go-ahead score with 3:21 remaining.

Karwacki, who caught a pass over the middle for a first down earlier on the drive, tight-roped the sideline just across the goal line on the touchdown reception.

The winning drive included a pass to Tymere Marshall for five yards, and a pair of runs by Owen VanDusen. On third-and-goal, Chamberlain connected with Rylan Mowers on a six-yard touchdown pass that was nullified by a holding penalty.

The Whip-Purs provided first-year head coach Braden Foster with his initial victory.

Aurora Christian 53, St. Edward 0: Jalen Callaway raced 70 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage Friday night in Aurora.

Callaway added touchdown runs covering 75 and 28 yards, respectively, while quarterback Juju Vasquez connected on a 52-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Luke Baumann, as Aurora Christian (3-0, 1-0) built a 20-0 first-quarter advantage.

Elgin 29, Bartlett 22: The Maroons (1-2, 1-0) built a 22-7 halftime advantage. Bartlett grabbed a 7-0 first-quarter lead on sophomore Brayden Magsombol’s one-yard touchdown run.

Elgin answered on its next possession, as Dan Beckett scored on a 32-yard reverse to tie the game at 7-all. Following a defensive stop, the Maroons took the lead when quarterback Jacob Rufino pitched the ball back to Jovan Gonzalez, who raced 86 yards for the go-ahead score in the second quarter.

Moments later, Anthony Foster recorded a sack and forced a fumble that was scooped up by Angel-Luis Hernandez at the Hawks’ 10-yard line. On the next play, Foster twisted and turned his way into the end zone on a 10-yard run, and Rufino’s two-point conversion pass to Hernandez extended the lead to 22-7.

IC Catholic Prep 22, St. Ignatius 15: Trailing 15-14 following a pair of St. Ignatius (2-1) fourth-quarter touchdowns, IC Catholic Prep (3-0) rallied for the 22-15 victory in Chicago.

Junior Grant Bowen’s interception with two minutes remaining helped set up sophomore tailback Jakobe Baldwin scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a 27-yard run. Baldwin, who rushed for 143 yards on 13 carries, added the two-point conversion.

Quarterback Nate Lang (16 of 24, 210 yards, two touchdowns) connected with Jaden Penna (four catches, 85 yards) for a pair of touchdown passes to give the Knights a 14-3 lead early in the third quarter.

Glenbard South 61, Ridgewood 13: Despite spotting Ridgewood a 6-0 lead, the Raiders (2-1, 1-0) rallied Friday night.

Quarterback Tommy Bauman connected with Anthony Baldauf on a 58-yard touchdown pass to give the Raiders the lead for good in the opening quarter.

Junior tailback Elijah Donahue helped seal the decision with second-half touchdown runs covering 34 and 63 yards, respectively.

Waubonsie Valley 28, Palatine 21: Makaio Halbert’s interception return for a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining lifted Waubonsie Valley (1-2) to its first victory of the season in a game delayed by lightning in the second half.

John Hung scored a pair of touchdowns for the Warriors, while Bradyn Hostetler added a scoring run.

York 38, Proviso West 0: Chris Georgas scored on a 47-yard touchdown run to power York (2-1, 1-0).
