Brooks, Naperville North pick off Barrington
Naperville North’s stifling defense kept Barrington’s offensive at bay for a 21-7 Huskies nonconference win Friday night in Barrington.
Naperville North’s defense intercepted four passes — three from Jake Brooks — stopped two fourth down conversion attempts and kept Barrington out of the red zone.
The visiting Huskies keyed on Broncos running back Lamar Osterhues, who returned to action after missing last week due to an injury. Naperville North limited the junior to 79 yards on 13 carriers.
Barrington (0-3) also suffered a setback when starting quarterback Tyle Logan had to leave the game due to an injury. Archer Haley came in as the signal caller.
Naperville North’s Jayke Collings sparked the Huskies offense by scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 103 yards on 26 carriers.
“Three (Osterhues) is a special running back,” Naperville North coach Sean Drendel said. “We tried to stop No. 3, and I think we did a pretty good job if it.”
Naperville North (2-1) held the Broncos to a total of 64 yards with negative rushing yards during the first half for a 14-0 lead at intermission.
Huskies quarterback Dante Colasante scored the first touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 3:08 left in the first quarter. The senior finished the night completing 14 of 26 passes for 166 yards.
Brooks’ first interception set up the Huskies’ second first half scoring drive that ended with a 5-yard TD run by Jayke Collins.
Barrington scored in the third quarter during a wild sequence that featured three turnovers — two by Naperville North and one by Barrington.
The Huskies’ opening drive of the half ended when Andrew Nazha intercepted a Colasante pass at Barrington’s 38-yard line. On the first play of Barrington’s ensuring drive, the Huskies defensive line forced a fumble.
Two plays into Naperville North’s drive, Barrington returned the favor when Broncos defensive lineman Jacob Patno scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 73 yards for a touchdown.
The Broncos threaten to tie the score on their first possession of the fourth quarter which started after a 90-minute lightning delay. Starting on Barrington's 12 yard-line, Haley handed the ball off to Osterhues five straight times to advance the team to midfield, but the drive stalled there.
“(Osterhues) almost got it going late in the game but we were able to stop him,” Drendel said.
The Broncos look to break into the win column Thursday when the team travels to Arlington Heights to play undefeated Hersey (3-0).
