Daily Herald Week 3 football previews
Conant (2-0) at Elk Grove (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Conant 26, Taft 7; Elk Grove 28, Leyden 0
Outlook: This game used to be played for the annual Elk Grove Mayor’s Cup. But the two schools haven’t met since 2019, with Conant winning the last two meetings. Both teams have not been to the playoffs since 2022, but with the new IHSA playoff rules, the winner here will become playoff eligible. Both teams have received great play from their defenses with both teams allowing just one touchdown this season. They have also got solid play from their quarterbacks. Conant QB Tyler Marchese has directed the Cougars Wing T to perfection. He has used the run to control the clock along with running backs Ivan Haralanov, Jackson Spizzirri and Anthony Burns. Marchese can also throw. He completed seven passes last week for a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile, Elk Grove quarterback Luke Maher has thrown for 334 yards and three touchdowns, looking to wide receivers Ryan Gomez and Matt Dimaria. The Grens have also leaned on running back Erik Sandoval.
Naperville Central (1-1) at Prospect (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Naperville Central 42, Lockport 21; Prospect 44, St. Laurence 7
Outlook: Prospect’s one-two punch of running back Matthew Donnelly and quarterback Jackson Cacini continues to damage opponents. Donnelly, who has an offer from Yale, scored four touchdowns last week to bring his season total to seven. Cacini, who has committed to Eastern Illinois, threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns last week. Meanwhile, the Knights defense, led by Colin Murrin, Evan Sohl, Oliver Koczhaj and Colin Fouch, has allowed just 17 points in two games. Naperville Central is coming off an impressive bounce-back win. The Redhawks got solid play from quarterback Simon Hayes, who threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns. Mark Williams, Ian Figi and Ryan Jacobson all caught touchdown passes.
Maine West (0-2) at Maine South (1-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Wauconda 56, Maine West 25; Maine South 54, Warren 14
Outlook: Thanks to the new alignment in the Central Suburban League, this is the first meeting between the schools since 2010. The teams also played in 2009 and Maine South won both meetings by a combined score of 112-0. After stumbling out of the box in the first week, Maine South was operating in full gear last week as head coach Dave Inserra picked up his 250th career win. Indiana commit Jameson Purcell threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of action. Syracuse commit Matt Schlenhardt looked good in the backfield and scored twice. Maine West, which also struggled in its opener, looked much better last week. The Warriors, who managed just six points in their opener, put up 25 points last week with 396 yards of total offense. Wyatt Roux threw for 216 yards and a touchdown to Davion Tate.
Hersey (2-0) at Neuqua Valley (1-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Hersey 42, Hoffman Estates 6; Neuqua Valley 27, Minooka 14
Outlook: Hersey continues to play better and that does not bode well for opponents. It has been nearly impossible to slow down Jake Nawrot. The Kentucky commit has thrown for 492 yards with Josh Riggs and Jaxson St. Paul his main targets. Jackson Travis has shown that the Huskies can run the ball with 188 yards. The Hersey defense has allowed just 28 points. Neuqua scored a pair of touchdowns last week in the final three minutes to pull out the win. Will Kalish has been a key to the Wildcats’ offense with four touchdown catches while quarterback Drake Mennecke has done a solid job of directing the offense.
Schaumburg (0-2) at Buffalo Grove (2-0)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Rolling Meadows 33, Schaumburg 22; Buffalo Grove 41, Deerfield 20
Outlook: Schaumburg has played well in its first two games. But the Saxons haven’t played well enough to put a win up yet. The Schaumburg offense has been churning. Led by quarterback Dylan Ramirez along with Mason Heydecker and Xavier Tudela, the Saxons put up nearly 300 yards of offense last week after putting up nearly 400 the prior week. Buffalo Grove has also leaned heavily into its offense. The Bison have brute Matthew Kaput running over opponents; the senior has accounted for 337 yards rushing. Quarterback Nathan Reif has taken advantage of defenses keying on Kaput and thrown for 256 yards.
Hoffman Estates (0-2) at Rolling Meadows (1-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Hersey 42, Hoffman Estates 6; Rolling Meadows 33, Schaumburg 22
Outlook: Hoffman has not begun a season with two consecutive losses since 2022. That team responded by winning its next six games, so coach Tim Heyse will be leaning into that history lesson. The Hawks will be looking to get more from their offense, which has scored only 20 points. Meadows’ offense, which has scored 60 points, has gone through senior running back Luke Harvey (411 rushing yards, six touchdowns). Quarterback Austin Lindsey has helped keep the pressure off Harvey with his arm and his legs, throwing for 141 yards last week while running for 67 more.
Naperville North (1-1) at Barrington (0-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Naperville North 21, Libertyville 14; Lincoln-Way Central 28, Barrington 14
Outlook: Barrington has not lost its first two games since 2022. The Broncos are looking to avoid three in a row for the first time since 2001. Barrington is hoping to have Lamar Osterhues back running the ball after the junior sat out last week’s game with an injury. Vince Costa stepped in quite nicely and ran for 114 yards in the second half. Naperville North pulled out a thriller in overtime last week when Dante Colassante threw a touchdown pass to Jack Zitko. Then the Huskies defense stopped Libertyville on fourth down inside the one. Colassante threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns.
Metea Valley (1-1) at Fremd (2-0)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Metea Valley 56, Plainfield Central 6; Fremd 35, Glenbrook South 21
Outlook: Fremd is picking up where it left off last season offensively. Quarterback Will Clark looked fabulous in his second start of the season, throwing for 341 yards and two touchdowns while running for another 72 yards and a touchdown. Carter McDonald was also explosive with his 191 receiving yards and eight catches, two of which went for touchdowns. Metea Valley won two games last season and just 10 in the previous nine seasons. But the Mustangs are coming off a solid performance against Plainfield Central. Iggy Amorrortu tossed four touchdown passes, two of which went to Charles Larson. Jaion Jones added a pair of touchdown runs.
Waubonsie Valley (0-2) at Palatine (1-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: New Trier 35, Waubonsie Valley 0; Evanston 14, Palatine 13
Outlook: Palatine is looking to rebound from a tough loss, giving up a long touchdown pass in the final two minutes and then failing to score when they had the ball at the Evanston 18-yard line. The Pirates will be looking to cut down their 80 yards of penalties and three turnovers last week. Waubonsie Valley quarterback Nolan Anderson had a long touchdown pass in his team’s opener.
Rochelle (1-1) at Wheeling (0-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Geneseo 26, Rochelle 21; Grayslake North 40, Wheeling 7
Outlook: The Wildcats feel they are improving through two weeks. “We had a tough time getting into a rhythm to start the game offensively, but we took some steps forward this week,” Wheeling coach Ryan Gronswick said of the Week 2 loss. “On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of guys got involved and we saw a lot of positives.” Quarterback Anthony Alvarado rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown. Rochelle is a 4A school that has qualified for the playoffs the last five seasons. The Hubs won their opener with Normal University, 55-14, before losing last week.
Willowbrook (1-1) at Leyden (1-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Oswego East 22, Willowbrook 14; Elk Grove 28, Leyden 0
Last year: Willowbrook 40, Leyden 8
Outlook: After an opening game victory over Highland Park, Leyden had a difficult time getting its offense in gear last week. Leyden managed just 99 yards, 78 of that coming from Nehemiah Almodovar on three receptions. Willowbrook stumbled last week after an impressive win over Glenbard East in its opener. Willowbrook has beaten Leyden 10 consecutive games.
Notre Dame (1-1) vs. St. Viator (0-2) at Forest View
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Morgan Park 26, Notre Dame 10; St. Patrick 52, St. Viator 14
Outlook: Viator is hoping to turn things around this week after a pair of one-sided losses to open the season. But the Lions showed significant improvement last week with a pair of long scoring plays. Seamus Rustay had a 56-yard run while Dylan Bergt scored on an 85-yard interception. Notre Dame opened its season with a pair of Public League teams, beating Westinghouse handily and losing to CPS power Morgan Park.
Maine East (0-2) at Evanston (2-0)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: West Chicago 53, Maine East 0; Evanston 14, Palatine 13
Outlook: These teams have started the season in opposite directions. The Demons were blanked last week and scored a lone touchdown in week one. Meanwhile, Evanston is on the upswing. The Wildkits upended Palatine last week after rolling over Phillips 50-6 in Week 1.
Grant Community (1-1) at Antioch (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Antioch 34, Lake Zurich 21; Grant 41, Glenbrook North 14
Last year: Antioch 35, Grant 30
Outlook: Our Lake County Blue Plate Special of the Week. Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said offensive line play in the big Week 2 win against Lake Zurich was excellent. “I’m not sure we’re going to see a defense that plays as tough in the box as Lake Zurich. I was proud of our guys up front.” Antioch has piled up 800 yards of total offense in its first two games… Glashagel added Antioch has won the turnover battle in the first two contests (plus-two) and is not committing many penalties (10 flags in two games). “Those are the hidden stats and we need to win those against the playoff-caliber teams,” he said. Glashagel pointed out Grant changed its offense this year to an option/spread. “It’s very similar to our offense,” he said. “They have some playmakers and we’ll have to contain them to be successful. Defensively, they are multiple.”... Sequoits running back Gavin Stone has rushed for 346 yards on 40 carries with six touchdowns so far… Grant attempted 3 passes against Glenbrook North and piled up 421 rushing yards on 44 carries (six rushing TDs) with Doltyn Longtin (21 carries, 168 yards, three TDs), Jackson Fudala (six carries, 150 yards, TD), Connor Evans (eight carries, 53 yards, TD) and Michael Potempa (nine carries, 50 yards, TD) starring…Three-year starting offensive guard Luke Youngberg “is really starting to come on this season,” Grant coach Tim Norwood said… Wyatt Cornell (seven tackles) and Carmelo Smith (interception) paced the Bulldogs’ defense in Week 2.
Grayslake Central (1-1) at Round Lake (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Mundelein 39, Grayslake Central 7, Round Lake 28, Streamwood 27
Last year: Grayslake Central 41, Round Lake 7
Outlook: Round Lake is 2-0 for the first time since 2017 and looks to hit three wins for the first time since 2006… “Our players have a confidence yet are humble,” Round Lake coach Randi Dey said. “We know we’re two plays away from being 0-2 so they are focused on being better. Grayslake Central is a conference opponent that runs the ball well and is physical.” …Standouts for the Panthers thus far include Devin Powell (three TDs, 150 yards receiving), Evan West (230 yards, three TDs, two interceptions), Jeremiah Kelly (97 yards rushing, TD) and Zenon Reyes (nine tackles, sack). Dey lauded the Week 2 efforts of Narcisco Gonzalez on defense in his first game back in football and Rylan Stump, who was effective in the passing game with 98 yards… Central coach Brent Pitt said his Rams team must be prepared for an improved Round Lake team. “Round Lake is 2-0 and playing with a lot of confidence,” he said. “They’re a talented, physical football team and are going to give us a great challenge. We had a tough night against Mundelein, but our kids came back ready to work, and that says a lot about them. There is a lot of energy in our program right now.”
Lakes (1-1) at Wauconda (2-0)

Outlook: The Bulldogs racked up 346 rushing yards in their win in Week 2 led by Brian Hart (10 carries, 111 yards, two TDs) and Brody Rudolph (15 carries, 106 yards, TD)….Brody McKenna (eight carries, 52 yards, three TDs), Luke Sickmeir (five catches, 101 yards, TD, five tackles, fumble recovery), Colton Zak (five tackles, sack, blocked punt), Brody Dzod (five tackles, sack) and Kelsey Funkhouser (eight-for-eight on point-after tries) starred, as did Jarren Cooley who also blocked a punt… Wauconda coach Chris Prostka said Mason Gomez stepped up in a starting role and played with great effort. Prostka explained Noah Schuck played a lot as a sophomore and this year has become a force on the offensive line. …. Lakes senior quarterback Ethan Gialo leads the team in rushing (115 yards), while senior inside linebacker John Tobin is tops in tackles and senior defensive lineman Nick Green has three tackles for loss. …. Coach Jason Ellerman liked how his offensive line played against Vernon Hills with three-year starter Jayce Figueroa leading the line with his experience. “I am very proud of the focus we showed bouncing back from our Week 1 loss,” he said. “We will have to tackle well and make sure we focus on our keys defensively against Wauconda.”
North Chicago (1-1) at Grayslake North (2-0)

Outlook: The Knights are averaging 8.5 yards per carry on offense and limiting opponents to 2.1 yards per rush on defense… Guillermo Ruiz had four tackles, seven assists and a tackle for loss in the Wheeling win….Jaylen Newkirk (116 yards passing, three TDs), Jaden Kelly (nine rushes, 93 yards, TD), Jason Howard (six rushes, 64 yards, TD), Finn McMahon (three catches, 44 yards, TD) and Alejandro Romero (four catches, 31 yards, TD) were key on offense for Grayslake North in Week 2…. Knights coach Brian Johnson said junior center Alex Danzy was outstanding with his communication on the offensive line last week. “Wheeling did a couple things they haven’t shown on film before and he was able to make the adjustments,” he said. Johnson said the Knights must be ready for an explosive North Chicago team that can stress defenses.
St. Laurence (0-2) at Carmel Catholic (1-1)

Outlook: 2025 Class 5A state-semifinalist St. Laurence comes into Mundelein looking for its first win after losses to Chicago King and Prospect. “This is always a physical matchup and will be some of our young starters’ first Chicago Catholic League varsity contest,” Carmel defensive coordinator Billy Moore said. “With a small varsity roster, we will continue to master fundamentals and limit mistakes.” ... The last two matchups between these teams came down to the final series with Carmel winning in Burbank last year... Jaquel Edmonds (12 carries 121 yards), Jorden Moore (13 carries, 125 yards) and Kyron Hart (5 catches, 121 yards, 3 TDs, including 2 of the spectacular variety) starred offensively for Carmel last week, as did quarterback Reed Dangel, who had a productive night against Lake Forest going 12 of 19 for 221 yards... Offensive lineman Mason Jones also has been impressive for the Corsairs. “Mason was physical in the run game (against Lake Forest) and took a big step forward,” Moore said. “He’s a bright spot on a strong offensive line that is filled with returning starters and talent…” Seniors Michael Zitella (7 tackles, 2 for loss, 1 fumble recovery), Eli Turner, Lucas Gonzalez and Issac Henderson all stepped up against Lake Forest on senior night, while junior Cyrus McGinnis had 9 tackles. …. Milun Katdare nailed a key 40-yard field goal last week…Keynan Morgan (68 rushing yards), Finn Crotty (61 rushing yards), Noah Taylor (39 rushing yards) and Zach Jones (42 receiving yards) led St. Laurence last week… “Carmel is a good, physical team coming off a dominant win,” St. Laurence coach Patrick Swanson said. “Their quarterback and run game do some things that really concern us.”…Carmel is ranked No. 6 in the most recent Illinois Media Class 6A state poll.
Vernon Hills (0-2) at New Trier (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Vernon Hills looks to get into the win column after losses to Grayslake North (42-21) and Lakes, two teams sitting at a combined 3-1… The Cougars head to Winnetka to encounter a New Trier squad that downed a pair of DuPage Valley Conference teams in Naperville North and Waubonsie Valley… The Trevians went 5-5 last year and qualified for the Class 8A state playoffs… This is a Central Suburban League crossover game.
Warren Township (0-2) at Libertyville (0-2)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last week: Maine South 54, Warren 14; Naperville North 21, Libertyville 14
Last year: Warren 49, Libertyville 21
Outlook: Through two weeks, Warren, Libertyville, Stevenson and Lake Zurich, traditionally the top teams in the North Suburban Conference are all 0-2… “We know Libertyville will be very competitive,” Blue Devils coach Bryan McNulty said. “They have what we believe to be the best tight end (Brock Williams) in the country and they use him well. We need to get on track. Our problems are self-made right now and fall on me. Our guys will adjust and get better…” Junior tailback Johnny Randolph ran for 84 yards on 16 carries against Maine South, while senior wide receiver Mikey Bunch had six catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns… McNulty said senior wide receiver Zech Yancy has been consistent in all phases of the Warren offense, while junior offensive lineman Caleb Ausburn has been getting better every week…Kaden Butt (120 rushing yards this season), Charlie Paden (nine catches, 118 yards, TD) and Williams (six receptions, 74 yards, TD against Naperville North) have starred offensively for Libertyville, while Butt (19 tackles), Luca Kalinowski (16 tackles), Matthew Hara (12 tackles), Jacob Syc (10 tackles) and Reid Williams (nine tackles) lead the way defensively. … Wildcats coach Tim Budge said Syc has stepped up at guard and has been strong in his defensive line duties, while Colten Siebert and Aleks Nikolich anchor the offensive line and Graham Sondalle has been a solid receiver, running great outs and blocking well…”Even though we haven’t seen the results we would like, we have made some great improvements from Week 1 to Week 2 and will continue to do so,” Budge said.
Stevenson (0-2) at Lake Zurich (0-2)

Outlook: One of two North Suburban matchups featuring historically strong programs looking for their first win of the season... In the Wheaton North game, Connor Kenning had 11 tackles, 2 for loss, while Brody Fergus had 13 tackles and Mkhai Agee had 11 tackles. Eli Sigal (two passing TDs), Luke Clark (receiving TD) and Tyler Becker (receiving TD) led the Patriots offense…Both teams’ losses have come to teams with combined 4-0 records heading into Week 3.
Mundelein (2-0) at Waukegan (0-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Mundelein 39, Grayslake Central 7; North Chicago 54, Waukegan 0
Last year: Mundelein 63, Waukegan 14
Outlook: Based on numbers being thrown around on paper, Mundelein would qualify for the expanded state playoffs with a win at Waukegan this week….Looking at the eight North Suburban teams, Mundelein and Zion are 2-0 after the first two weeks and the other six teams sport 0-2 records… All sorts of positives for the Mustangs in their win against Central last week with Cam Earing (14 rushes, 134 yards, two TDs), Sladen Poutre (nine rushes, 108 yards, three TDs) and Nathan O’Neil (12 rushes, 78 yards, TD) getting it done on offense, while Urijah Willoughby (four tackles, sack, pass breakup), Toby Heikes (four tackles, two for loss) and Chris Roi (tackle for loss, interception) starred defensively….Coach Johnny Cowhey noted Randy Heistand is leading the team in tackles through two weeks and has an incredibly high motor on defense, while Ashton Salski is playing both ways at tight end and middle linebacker “and is doing an incredibly effective job,” he said. Cowhey added Waukegan is athletic and wants to get out wide to make plays.
Montini (1-1) at Marist (2-0)
When: Friday 7:30 p.m.

Last year: Montini 28, Marist 21
Outlook: The Broncos, who had their 25-game winning streak snapped last weekend, look to start another streak against an unbeaten Marist squad that has topped the 40-point mark in consecutive games. Montini senior quarterback Izzy Abrams has completed 25 of 49 passes for 423 yards and five touchdowns in the first two games. Joey Neustadt and Damacio Ortegon have combined for 15 receptions and 276 yards, while Ben Evenson leads the defense with 20 tackles, including six for loss. Marist features captains Marquis Steel, Tommy Hosty, Conor Hunt, Scott Kulekowskis, and Jack Lorenz.
St. Francis (1-1) at Brother Rice (1-1)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: St. Francis 48, Clemente 0; Brother Rice 69, Woodlawn 0
Outlook: Both teams rebounded from season-opening defeats last week. Tavian Talton returned the opening kickoff 63 yards for a touchdown, igniting the Spartans’ 41-point first quarter. Blayke Lohmann caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt 25 yards for another score. Crusaders freshman quarterback Sam Holcomb has accounted for eight touchdowns – five passing and three rushing. This is a battle between the defending Class 5A state champion Spartans and 7A champion Crusaders.
Benet Academy (1-1) at Chicago Leo (2-0)
When: Friday 6 p.m.
Where: St. Xavier University
Last week: Glenbard North 49, Benet 7; Leo 12, Blue Island Eisenhower 0
Outlook: Benet Academy fell behind early during last weekend’s 49-7 setback. Quarterback Alex Mitchell threw for 103 yards and a touchdown, while running back Zachary Ihde gained 42 yards on 12 carries for the Redwings. Leo sophomore quarterback Terrence Wilson has thrown three touchdown passes in two games.
IC Catholic Prep (2-0) vs. St. Ignatius (2-0)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: IC Catholic Prep 42, St. Mary’s (Mo.) 14; St. Ignatius 58, Hope Academy 6
Last year: IC Catholic Prep 33, St. Ignatius 12
Outlook: The battle of unbeatens pits IC Catholic against St. Ignatius, which has outscored its first two foes, 109-6. Knights senior quarterback Nate Lang has completed 70 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns over two weeks, while junior Division 1 recruit Grant Bowen averages 117 receiving yards per contest. Defensively, the Knights are paced by Jalen Banks (eight tackles per game) and Will Schmidt (seven tackles per game). St. Ignatius features tailback Nino Capuano and quarterback Reid Hites.
Chicago Christian (1-1) at Wheaton Academy (2-0)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Dwight 12, Chicago Christian 6; Wheaton Academy 19, LaSalle-Peru 6
Last year: Wheaton Academy 49, Chicago Christian 14
Outlook: The Warriors look to make it three in a row. Quarterback Colton Miller connected with Western Illinois commit Logan Oros on a 64-yard touchdown pass, while Robert Venhuizen added a rushing score last weekend. The Knights, led by senior quarterback Tyce Hamstra, have allowed just 19 points in two games.
Batavia (1-1) at Glenbard North (2-0)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Rochester 44, Batavia 16; Glenbard North 49, Benet Academy 7
Last year: Batavia 42, Glenbard North 27 (7A quarterfinals); Batavia 41, Glenbard North 13 (regular season)
Outlook: The Bulldogs uncharacteristically committed four turnovers and turned the ball over on downs three times during last weekend’s stunning 44-16 nonconference loss. Now, they prepare to begin DuKane Conference action against familiar foe Glenbard North – a team they beat twice last season. Last week, tight end Thomas Prescott caught nine passes for 109 yards, while tailback Charlie Rosengren accounted for 111 all-purpose yards. Glenbard North senior running back Angelo Gatses has scored six touchdowns in two games, while junior quarterback Logan Kramer accounted for six scores – four passing, two rushing – last week.
Wheaton North (2-0) at Lake Park (1-1)
When: Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Wheaton North 31, Stevenson 13; Lake Park 41, Glenbard South 6
Last year: Wheaton North 30, Lake Park 20
Outlook: Capitalizing on four takeaways, including three fumble recoveries on kickoffs, the Falcons improved to 2-0 with last week’s victory over Stevenson. Outlook: Don’t look now, but the Saints are off to their first 2-0 start since 2022. Junior Rowan Slovick has also enjoyed a strong start running behind an offensive line that features junior Division I prospect Liam Barrett, seniors Nolan Krzystofiak and Troy DeMien, junior Saxton Pairolero, and sophomore Thurston Fleps. The Tigers saw their 9-0 halftime lead evaporate during last weekend’s loss. Junior quarterback AJ Rogers has plenty of weapons to choose from, including wideouts Blake Ittersagen, Steven Harvey, Kennan Yarbrough, and senior tight end Jacob Bellows.

Fenton fell inches shy of opening the season with a 2-0 mark, as East Aurora recovered a fumble in the end zone in overtime to thwart Bison hopes. Angel Duran, who had a 51-yard touchdown run last weekend, leads an offense that includes multi-threat Luke Loncar.
Riverside-Brookfield (1-1) at West Chicago (1-1)

Quarterback Lucas Wheat passed for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while middle linebacker Geoffrey Fleming anchored the defense. Fleming averages eight and a half tackles per contest. R-B quarterback Braeden Novak averages 135 yards rushing per game, and has plenty of offensive weapons to choose from, including tight end Nick Baca, and receivers Nico Caputo, James Organ, and Tim Giacomelli, Jr.
Glenbard South (1-1) at Ridgewood (1-1)

Glenbard South’s defense allowed 34 first-half points to Lake Park. Senior quarterback Tommy Bauman provided a highlight with a touchdown pass to tight end Cooper Langreder. Ridgewood quarterback Angelo Vitale had a pair of touchdown runs and threw a touchdown pass – all in the first half – last weekend.
Downers Grove South (1-1) at Addison Trail (2-0)

Outlook: How will the Mustangs respond after last weekend’s crosstown loss? Junior quarterback James Sobkowiak directs the Mustangs’ offense. The Mustangs’ defense allowed 400 yards last week. DGS, which captured three straight WSC Gold titles from 2022-2024, saw its 23-game conference winning streak ended in dramatic fashion by Addison Trail last season. The Blazers, who earned their first outright conference championship since 2014 last season, look for a 3-0 start to the 2026 campaign. Quarterback Robert Morales has enjoyed a solid start, evidenced by his 19-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Romeus with 4:23 remaining that helped seal their victory over Bartlett. Defensively, the Blazers have allowed 18 points in their first two contests.
Hinsdale South (0-2) at Proviso East (1-1)

Proviso East matched last season’s win total by capturing the Proviso showdown last weekend. Jalen Burge’s 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown snapped a 6-6 deadlock. Pirates wideout Awbre Henry caught a 65-yard touchdown pass during their season-opening 46-6 loss to Leo.
Downers Grove North (2-0) at Hinsdale Central (2-0)

Kevin Jay tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns, including a 41-yarder for the game’s first touchdown, while quarterback Joey Goodwin threw two TD passes. The Red Devils, whose last win over Hinsdale Central came in 2021 (30-20), received a memorable performance from quarterback Beau Gatewood, who had three touchdown passes and a touchdown run during their win over West Aurora. James Skokna added a pair of short-yardage TD runs.

Outlook: Following an impressive 20-17 season-opening win over Glenbrook South, the Dukes’ offense was slowed by perennial power Nazareth. Roadrunners tailback Charles Calhoun ran for a pair of touchdowns. York’s offense features quarterback Zack Assaad and running back Chris Georgas. Proviso West junior quarterback DJ Perry provided the Panthers’ lone score against Proviso East on a one-yard keeper. That touchdown tied the game for less than 10 seconds, as Pirates return specialist Jalen Burge raced 73 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff.
Oak Park-River Forest (1-1) at Glenbard West (1-1)

Senior quarterback Liam Brown guides the Huskies’ offense, flanked by sophomore receiver Cameron Minish-Murray, and tailback Liam Smith. Minus five defensive starters due to injuries, the Hilltoppers dropped a 36-35 decision to defending 7A state runner-up St. Rita. Quarterback AJ Rayford and Northwestern commit tight end Brady Johnson anchor the Hilltoppers’ offense. Johnson saw some time on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker last weekend.
Westmont (2-0) at Walther Christian (0-2)

Junior quarterback Trevor Robertson received a key block from sophomore teammate Brayden Vidito to help spring a 53-yard touchdown run, while tailback Charles Steketee added a five-yard touchdown run. Senior Johnathon Muralles, junior Damian Hurtado, and sophomore Luis Macias anchor the Sentinels’ offensive line. Walther Christian features receivers Meekyel Sams, Christian Dunston, Nathaniel Clark, and Le’ron Chaney.

Outlook: The North Stars head into their DuKane Conference opener with plenty of momentum, having outscored their first two opponents, 84-28. Last weekend, sophomore Dash Von Qualen completed all four of his passes and added a 35-yard touchdown run, while senior Landon Conroy was four of six passing with a touchdown, and added a 45-yard TD run. Sophomore receiver/kick returner Jameson Walters has provided a boost for the North Stars, while senior tailback Tommy Vendl has workhorse capability. Can anyone slow down Vikings senior receiver Bennett Konkey? The Illinois commit enters Week 3 with six receiving touchdowns and an average of 200.5 yards per game. Senior quarterback Ben Peterson, an Eastern Michigan commit, has completed 65 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Jake Linkowski provided St. Edward’s lone score with a 2-yard touchdown run during the team’s loss to Lisle.
Prairie Ridge (0-2) at Jacobs (2-0)

Outlook: Two teams heading in opposite directions to start the 2026 campaign. Jacobs, led by quarterback Austin Stennett, edged Hampshire as Stennett threw for 206 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Eagles are seeking their first win over Prairie Ridge since 2022. The defending Fox Valley Conference champion Wolves are 0-2 for the first time since 2002. After averaging 40 points per game a year ago, Prairie Ridge has scored just 20 points in their first two contests this season.
Burlington Central (2-0) at Cary-Grove (1-1)

Burlington looks for its second straight victory over Cary-Grove, which rebounded from its season-opening loss to Jacobs. Dual threat quarterback Jackson Berndt ran for a pair of touchdowns and tossed a 37-yard scoring pass to Ty Tenopir, while Matthew Maka had a pair of interceptions last week.

Tailback Tristan Gatenby ran for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns against McHenry, snapping a 15-all deadlock with his 57-yard scoring jaunt.
Crystal Lake Central (0-2) at Hampshire (0-2)

Outlook: Tarell Hall provided one of the bright spots with an 11-yard touchdown run last weekend. Senior quarterback Michael Silvius completed 12 of 20 passes for 101 yards for the Gators, who allowed 178 rushing yards and four touchdowns to the Rockets. McHenry has played a pair of nailbiters – beating Crystal Lake Central (19-13) and losing to Dundee-Crown (22-15).
DeKalb (1-1) at Kaneland (2-0)

Riley provided a highlight with a 75-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Tyler Fecht tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Richard Bell. The Sabres fell inches shy of a 2-0 start. Justin Brown, who averages 151 rushing yards per game, has scored five touchdowns in two games.
South Elgin (1-1) at Larkin (0-2)

Outlook: This game was going to be a celebration of sorts for Larkin, which was originally going to host its first home game on campus at Ray Haley Field – named after the school’s first football coach. That has been rescheduled for Week 8. South Elgin freshman Jeremiah Torres provided one of the highlights for the Storm last week with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Peru-St. Bede (1-1) at Aurora Central Catholic (0-2)
