Lombard marks 25 years since 9/11 with remembrance ceremony and blood drive

The village of Lombard invites residents and community members to gather in remembrance on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at 9 a.m. at the Public Safety Plaza outside Lombard Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave., to mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day, as well as the first responders and others who demonstrated extraordinary courage and sacrifice in the aftermath of the attacks.

“Twenty-five years may have passed, but the lives lost and the acts of courage we witnessed on Sept. 11 remain with us,” said Lombard Fire Chief Rick Sander. “Coming together as a community gives us an opportunity to remember, reflect and honor all those who were impacted by that day.”

Sept. 11 is observed nationally as Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to remember those who lost their lives and honor their memory through service to others.

As part of this year’s observance, the village is also encouraging community members to give back by donating blood at the We Remember Blood Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The blood drive will be held at two locations: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the lower-level mall entrance of Von Maur at Yorktown Center; and 1:30 to 7 p.m. at First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St.
