Naperville DAR celebrates Constitution Week Sept. 17-23

Constitution Week will be celebrated across the nation on Sept. 17-23.

Naperville’s Fort Payne Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution annually recognizes this week after the National Society petitioned Congress in 1956 for a bill to celebrate democracy’s foundational document.

Fort Payne will kick off Constitution Week on Thursday, Sept. 17. Brookdale Elementary School children will raise the flag and toll the school bell at 8 a.m.; Naper Elementary School will ring its bell at 2:15 p.m.

Mayor Scott Wehrli will present a city proclamation to the members of Fort Payne at 9:30 a.m., declaring Sept. 17-23 Constitution Week in Naperville.

Veterans’ clubs at Naperville Central and Naperville North high schools will join Fort Payne members on the steps of the Millennium Carillon to ring handbells at 3 p.m., the precise moment when the church bells of Philadelphia rang out when the U.S. Constitution first was signed at 4 p.m. (EST) on Sept. 17, 1787. Carillonneur Tim Sleep will play patriotic songs.

The public is invited to attend the bell celebration at the Carillon.

Throughout the week, posters and activities will be on display in each of the three libraries to promote the U.S. Constitution.

Pick up a pocket-size version of the U.S. Constitution and learn more about the Preamble, the Bill of Rights, and how Americans became “We the People.”
