Barrington United Methodist Church’s rummage sale returns for 92nd year on Oct. 2-3

Treasure hunters and bargain shoppers won’t want to miss Barrington United Methodist Church’s 92nd annual rummage sale on Oct. 2-3. The sale will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church, 98 Algonquin Road in Barrington.

An entire wing of the church and a large tent will be filled with thousands of clean, usable items, including clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, toys, lamps, housewares, linens, holiday items, crafts, fabrics, small appliances, tools, sporting goods, bikes, and garden items. (The sale does not offer furniture, books, DVDs, CDs, or electronics.)

With so much to explore, everyone is sure to discover something special.

Looking for one-of-a-kind finds, designer label clothing, art, or antiques? The popular “French Room” is packed with treasures at bargain prices, including china, crystal, collectibles, and other carefully selected high-quality decorative items.

For those looking for even bigger bargains, the popular half-price sale begins at 3 p.m. on Friday. Saturday shoppers can take advantage of the Bargain Bag Sale in select departments, where anything you can fit into designated bags is just $5, $10, or $15.

The French Room and Jewelry & Accessories also will be half-price on Saturday. More than 1,000 shoppers attend the sale each year, with many returning year after year to see what new treasures await.

Every purchase helps make a difference. Funds from the sale benefit local organizations and United Women in Faith ministries which serve women, children, and youth nationally and in more than 38 countries worldwide.

Shopping the rummage sale is also a great way to care for the environment while stretching your budget. Purchasing and donating gently used items gives them a second life, keeps usable goods out of landfills, and supports sustainable recycling. Items that are not sold find new homes through various resale shops and organizations or are recycled.

Tax-deductible donations of goods will be accepted Sunday, Sept. 27, from noon to 2 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28-29, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. until noon.

“Because donations do not come in until the week of the sale, we never know what will be available for purchase,” said Linda Osikowicz, co-chair of the sale. “The entire sale is a surprise!”

“Over 100 volunteers contribute to the success of our sale,” said co-chair Sydney Whitley. Other committee members include Elaine Anderson, Jeanette Burger, Janeen Hamack, Carol Henrikson, Silvia Grabacki, and Mary Ulery.
