Pham returning to the White Sox

HOUSTON — Tommy Pham is returning to the White Sox.

The Sox are acquiring the veteran outfielder from the Philadelphia Phillies for cash considerations, a source confirmed to the Tribune on Monday.

Pham spent a portion of the 2024 season with the Sox, slashing .266/.330/.380 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 70 games. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals along with pitcher Erick Fedde as part of the three-team deal in July of 2024 in which the Sox landed third baseman Miguel Vargas from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pham, 38, signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies in June and spent the last two months with their Triple-A affiliate Lehigh Valley. He hit .250 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 44 games for the IronPigs.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan initially reported Monday’s move, noting that Pham is expected to join the Sox when rosters expand on Tuesday.

Pham has a career .256/.344/.421 slash line with 149 home runs and 522 RBIs in 1,250 games over 13 major-league seasons with the Cardinals (2014-18, ’24), Tampa Bay Rays (2018-19), San Diego Padres (2020-21), Cincinnati Reds (2022), Boston Red Sox (2022), New York Mets (2023, 2026), Arizona Diamondbacks (2023), White Sox (2024), Kansas City Royals (2024) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2025).

Pham appeared in nine games this year with the Mets, going 0-for-13. He was designated for assignment by the Mets in late April and played 16 games for Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk before being released on June 12. His first game with Lehigh Valley was on July 2.

He would add plenty of playoff-race experience to a young Sox team that is in first place in the American League Central.

Pham has played in playoff games for the Cardinals (2015), Rays (2019), Padres (2020), Diamondbacks (2023) and Royals (2024). He is a career .315 postseason hitter, including batting .421 in the 2023 World Series.
