Better government accountability needed

JD Vance said that if Watergate happened today, it would be only a 12-hour news story. That statement captures how normalized corruption has become in American politics. The Republican Party has long protected wealthy interests, but the Trump administration has made its corruption unusually blatant and shameless.

The administration has faced serious questions about efforts to restrict IRS audits involving Trump and his affiliated businesses, government opportunities benefiting politically connected individuals, the $1 million Gold Card immigration program, and Trump’s reported $1.43 billion in cryptocurrency income. The aircraft provided by Qatar, reportedly worth $400 million, raises additional questions about foreign influence and presidential ethics.

The administration’s 150 million dollar agreement with Burke Law Group is especially troubling. The firm, which has 26 employees, was selected to represent unaccompanied migrant children, even though its founder, Marcella Burkey, previously served in the Trump administration. Reports describe the arrangement as a single source agreement, shutting out meaningful competition and creating an obvious appearance of political favoritism.

This is not normal government accountability. If Democrats regain power, they must investigate these deals immediately and prosecute anyone who used public office to enrich themselves, their families, or their political allies.
