President Donald Trump to attend Presidents Cup in Chicago area as tournament’s honorary chairman

President Donald Trump said Saturday he will be coming to the Chicago area in September after being named the honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup golf tournament, which is being held at Medinah Country Club in the Western suburbs.

The PGA Tour announced that the president had accepted the invitation, and Trump posted on his Truth Social account that he would attend the tournament, which features 24 of the world’s top golfers — 12 from the United States versus 12 golfers from around the world, excluding Europe.

“This will be a particularly exciting event. Both teams are ‘loaded’ with Talent. I look forward to being there, and greeting all of these fantastic athletes, on both teams,” Trump posted. “See you in Chicago!”

The Medinah course is located in the unincorporated community of Medinah, which is bordered by Itasca, Roselle and Bloomingdale. The tournament is scheduled from Sept. 22-27.

It will be Trump’s first public appearance in the Chicago region since he was elected to his second term in 2024. It will also come a little more than a year after the president threatened the city in a Truth Social post with the meme titled “Chipocalypse Now” and declaring, “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” along with stating, “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.”

The meme was a play on the 1979 Vietnam War movie “Apocalypse Now,” showing Trump in a U.S. Army uniform modeled after actor Robert Duvall. It presaged the Trump administration’s Operation Midway Blitz enforcement mission in the Chicago area last fall.

The 2026 Presidents Cup will be the second one Trump has served as honorary chairman of. Trump was the honorary chairman in 2017, when the event was held at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. President Joe Biden was the honorary chairman of the event in 2022 and President Barack Obama was honorary chairman in 2013 and 2009.
