AR-15 rifle stolen out of Kane County deputy’s squad vehicle parked in Aurora, sheriff’s office says

An AR-15 rifle was stolen recently from a Kane County deputy’s squad vehicle in Aurora, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office says.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office said in a news release, when a deputy’s squad vehicle was burglarized while it was parked at the deputy’s home in Aurora, and a county-owned Aero Precision AR-15 rifle was stolen.

Following the incident, the sheriff’s office’s Investigations Division has been “developing and pursuing leads associated with potential suspects,” the news release said.

On Friday morning, Kane County Undersheriff Amy Johnson told The Beacon-News there were no updates on the incident, but that the office is still actively working on its investigation.

The office said in the news release that it initially limited the information that was released publicly about the situation due to the active investigation efforts, saying that “releasing additional details … could have jeopardized leads and efforts to identify and locate those potentially involved.”

The investigation remains ongoing, the sheriff’s office said, noting that, at this point, the incident is believed to be isolated. The office is asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact its Investigations Division at (630) 444-1103.

Separate from the criminal investigation, the office says it is also conducting an internal administrative review to determine whether sheriff’s office policies and procedures were followed.
