Murder charges filed against driver in deadly Geneva crash

An Aurora man accused of killing two people in a July crash in Geneva is now facing charges of first-degree murder.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Hillary Sadler told a judge about the additional charges Thursday during pretrial detention hearing for Christian Mares.

Mares, 40, also is charged with aggravated DUI causing death, reckless homicide and aggravated use of electronic device, all felonies.

The crash happened about 9:13 p.m. July 4 in the 1000 block of South Randall Road.

According to police, Mares was driving a Chevrolet Camaro north on Randall when it crossed over the double-yellow line into southbound traffic and hit a Nissan Versa driven by 71-year-old Mary Wilbur of Geneva.

Wilbur died at the scene. Her son, 27-year-old Zachary Rohbock of Michigan, died July 12.

Thursday’s hearing was continued to Sept. 30 at Mares’ request. Assistant Public Defender Bethany McLean said he wants to hire a private attorney. In the meantime, Mares remains in custody at the Kane County jail.
