Girls flag football season preview: Maine South aims to defend state championship as sport continues to grow
The 2028 LA Olympics are poised to include flag football for the first time in history. Many NFL stars have already placed their name in the queue to lead the national team.
Women's flag football is also expected to be a headliner. In Illinois, the early adaptation and the growth of the game is producing standout teams and athletes alike.
Flag is growing throughout the Chicagoland suburbs and the area is quickly becoming a hub for top national talent. As it enters its third season as an IHSA sanctioned sport, the game itself is picking up steam and earning recognition as an up-and-coming category.
Traditional IHSA gridiron powerhouse Maine South took home the state title last season. The Hawks are a favorite to repeat and ranked fifth in the USA Today National Preseason Top 25, while state runner-up Whitney Young was ninth.
Hawks coach Carlos Panizo feels that this year's group will be, “ younger and more inexperienced compared to last year, but eager to prove themselves.”
Maine South will be led by sophomore linebacker Tina Majka, who was named to the USA Today Preseason All-American first team last week.
Her teammate and two-way standout Emerson De La Cruz was named to the USA Today second team roster and recently offered by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ahead of her senior season.
Willowbrook claimed 14th place in the same poll.
“We are excited to get back on the field and compete this upcoming season,” said Warriors coach Rachel Karos. “We are hoping to make another strong run in the state series.”
Her program graduated Leigh Bernado from a roster that finished third in state last year. While Bernado heads to the US National Team trials and a top ranked flag program at Keiser University this fall in Florida, 2026 West Suburban Gold defensive player of the year Janell Adams returns to a group that expects to reload rather than rebuild.
“We have a great mix of experienced veterans and talented young players. We keep getting better as we continue to build chemistry,” added Karos. “I think this team will be full of grit, high energy, and fundamental football.”
Glenbrook South came in at 19th and will be led by WR/DB Cooper Godbout, who was also named to the USA Today second team.
“We are a very young team, but a very talented team with a great work ethic,” said Titans coach Tom Godbout.
All-in-all, year three of flag should be a highly competitive season in the Land of Lincoln as in-state rivalries develop and the spotlight continues to shine brighter on the sport.

Addison Trail

2025 record: 7-11, 5-1 West Suburban
Players to watch: QB Sophia Guillen, Evolet Mata WR/FS, rush Sofia Violante
Outlook: The Trail Blazers graduated a lot of talent from their 2024 regional championship roster, which led to a year of growth last season. Coach Jennifer Schulmeister said her team took steps forward late in the season and expects that to continue in the year ahead.
Quote: “We are battle-tested and resilient. We cannot wait to start the new season off on Aug. 25 at West Chicago,” Schulmeister said.
Barrington
Coach: Emily Behrendt
2025 record: 14-7
Players to watch: Rush Riley Rivero, RB Alex Ryder, safety Caley Skidmore, RB/WR Zoe Martin, QB Gia Klauer
Outlook: Rivero, Ryder, Skidmore, Martin, and Klauer were each all-conference selections last season. Martin scored 17 touchdowns. Skidmore was MSL West defensive player of the year with 12 interceptions. Rivero had 104 flag pulls. Ryder scored 11 touchdowns. Klauer earned all-state honors with 26 touchdown passes for 1,335 yards.

Carmel
Coach: Ben Berg
2025 record: 21-2, lost in sectional final to Glenbrook South 27-18
Players to watch: WR/DB Grace Booher, Malyah Mays, Katherine Anen
Outlook: WR/DB Grace Booher returns to a regional championship team that won over 20 games last season. Booher was an all-state nominee. Maliyah Mays earned newcomer honors for the Corsairs and should contribute again this year. Katherine Anen will lead the way defensively.
East Aurora
Coach: Roderick Whyte
2025 record: 0-11
Players to watch: QB/WR Evelyn Rodriguez, DB Yaretzi Ruiz, LB Valentina Barboza
Outlook: A winless team in 2025 adds a considerable group of young talent, according to coach Roderick Whyte. The physical, energetic, and compassionate group of newcomers include DB Iris Ridas-Reyes, RB Aly Rodriguez, WR Britiany Garbibaldo, LB Brianna Ontiveros, WR Camila Rodriguez, DB Ariana Terrazas, WR Vanessa Tesillos, QB Gianna Reyes, and DB Ashley Tobar-Hernandez.
Quote: “Our biggest win was that [we] did not quit or give up on the team or each other. We improved from week to week and the girls demonstrated perseverance throughout the season,” Whyte said.
Elk Grove
Coach: Courtney Lindfors
2025 record: 18-2, beat Glenbrook North in regionals
Players to watch: Brianna Magner, Alanis Rivera, Tola Moore, Elyssa Chan, Anaya Sanchez, Idabelle Hoebert
Outlook: Elk Grove won its division in the Mid-Suburban last season and advanced to the regional finals. Quarterback Idabelle Hoebert will lead the offense with newcomers Elyssa Chan and Anaya Sanchez bringing a new dynamic to the roster. Brianna Magner, Alanis Rivera, and Tola Moore are standout returners.
Quote: “We are a brand new team that has a lot of speed,” Lindfors said.
Fremd
Coach: Rebecca O’Dette
2025 record: 17-5, lost to Glenbrook South 24-12 in sectional semifinal
Outlook: The Vikings defeated Elk Grove in the MSL title game last fall, advanced past Hersey with a 41-6 in the regional semifinals before defeating Stevenson for a regional championship. They fell to Glenbrook South in the sectional semifinal.
Geneva
Coach: Kaleigh O’Brien
2025 record: 9-6, third in DuKane
Players to watch: Newcomers include Aylin Bauman, Chloe Chiappini, Ella Daugherty, Isabella Davis, Summer Dieter, Nia Flotte, Nataija Gaikis, Alexis Hand, Madison Herlehy, Leia Irwin, Katelyn Johnson, Emelia Lyons, Rylie McLearen, Arianna Mejia, and Hadley Stajduhar
Outlook: Last year was the inaugural season for the Vikings. Coach Kaleigh O’Brien was pleased with the varsity experience her group gained week-in and week-out. Heading into year two, they better understand the expectations that come with success and are looking to build on the foundation established in year one.
Quote: “Our biggest win was earning a postseason victory, which was a great accomplishment for a first-year program and gave our players a taste of what it takes to compete in the postseason,” O’Brien said.
Glenbard West

Outlook: The Hilltoppers had a great record in their first season of flag football a year ago, with senior leadership setting the tone. This year’s team is well rounded and added a lot of athletic players to the roster that have positional flexibility.
Quote: “We didn't go as far as we wanted to in the postseason but I think it was a valuable experience for this team to learn to play under higher stakes and a lesson they will find valuable this season,” Brezwyn said.
Glenbrook South
Coach: Tom Godbout
2025 record: 17-3, defeated season-long No. 1 Carmel in sectional final
Players to watch: WR/DB Cooper Godbout, Kate Ptak, Addison Gracia, Alexis Erickson, Alexis Conlon, QB Jillian Kramme, C Hannah Babcock, CB Samantha Livaditis, S June Floyd
Outlook: The Titans followed up a strong regular season with impressive wins over Elk Grove, Fremd, and Carmel in the state tournament before falling to eventual state champion Maine South. Godbout returns at WR/DB. She was named to the USA Today All-American second team. The Titans came in at No. 19 in the USA Today preseason team rankings. Godbout and Erickson were second team all-state selections. Conlon made all-conference.

Hersey
Coach: Whitney Dorsey
2025 record: 8-11
Players to watch: QB Ciara Brown, C Bryce McGuinn, WR Allie Kirch, RB/WR/LB Gianna Walters, LB Jordan Patterson, LB/S Catherine Smithson, S/RB/WR Finley Spokas, S/WR Camille Devine, LB Abby Cannon, S Kaitlyn East
Outlook: Brown threw for over 4,000 yards last season, finding McGuinn early and often as her No. 2 target. Their chemistry will serve the Huskies well this fall as the pairing will be expected to set the tempo for a team with a young and developing defensive core.
Quote: “We expect our offensive unit to shoulder the load and carry the momentum early in the season while our defense gains valuable game experience,” Dorsey said.
Hinsdale Central
Coach: Nicholas Gebhart
2025 record: 1-12
Players to watch: QB Emersyn Willits, WR/DB Elle Kinder, WR Violet Masood, ATH Carley Brunell, and WR/RB Nadia Stewart
Outlook: Willits threw for 2,631 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Masood had 252 receiving yards. That duo will look to carry their chemistry over to the new season. This year’s team will have many new faces, as 18 players graduated from a 32 player roster.
Quote: “As our school continues to embrace and invest in flag football, our players' skill, confidence, and knowledge of the game will continue to improve, making this an exciting season of growth and opportunity,” Gebhart said.
Hinsdale South
Coach: Janelle Marconi
2025 record: 14-6
Players to watch: WR Sky Herbert, RB/WR Rachel Tolentino, defenders April Hardy, Tejiyha Jones, Briasia Satterfield, Karsen Smith, and Ka’Miyah Spruill. Newcomers include: Dayana Fields, Alyson Kpoh, Gianna Storino, and Reagan Wirth
Outlook: The Hornets will be a young team that hopes to establish a strong culture around their program in year three of flag football. There could be a learning curve, but the group played together well last season behind coach Marconi, claiming several come from behind victories.
Quote: “We had a lot of great wins and hard fought battles but I would say our biggest win was against St. Laurence during our Hornet Tri Tournament,” Marconi said.
Hoffman Estates
Coach: Kyle Thomas
2025 record: 1-13
Players to watch: QB Kayleigh James, WR/LB Kaleah Ward, WR Anna Sankey, QB/WR/DB Caleigh Banks, C Alexis Whalen, DE Gianna Krautstrunk, DE McKayla Peterson
Outlook: The Hawks were working hard throughout their first few days of practice to create a new culture for flag football in Hoffman Estates. Coach Thomas hopes to put his playmakers in position to be difference makers this fall. He feels that the group has excellent team speed.
Quote: “We're a young team that has speed when we get in the open field and a very competitive group of multi-sport athletes,” Thomas said.
Lake Park
Coach: Jay Ivory
2025 record: 3-14
Players to watch: Teagen White, Harper Downs, Lyanna Zavalza, Maci Gravina, Delilah Rafael, Scarlett Bartlett, Mila Cifaldi-Johnson, Gabriella Russo, Laila Anderson
Note: The Lancers won their first varsity game last season and are expecting to take steps forward this fall. Bartlett is a standout that brings a sharp knowledge of the game and experience on both sides of the ball. Cifaldi-Johnson and Russo are speedsters who should contribute on offense. Anderson will also make an impact.
Outlook: “Energetic, dynamic, resilient,” Ivory said about the team. “We had a good summer camp, and we are looking to build on what they started last year.”
Lake Zurich
Coach: Randal Dunbar
2025 record: 12-5, second in North Suburban
Players to watch: WR Gwyneth Schingoethe, WR Avary Eckman, WR/LB Kendall Hull, RB Celina Hernandez, RUSH Axia Alonso, RUSH Annabel Oglvie, LB Renata Reip, Lexie Kahle, Emily Bowen, DB Ellie Kiehn, ATH Kennedy Koppa
Outlook: The Bears grew quickly in their first year as a program. They went from a team with only 1 player who had flag football experience to competing for a regional championship. Schingoethe and Hull both earned All Conference honors. Alonso and Oglvie combined for 20 sacks.
Quote: “Our girls are so excited to start this season,” Dunbar said. “The culture they have created is really impressive. They are hungry for more too, to get to a higher level and push to get deeper into the playoffs.”
Leyden
Coach: Ryan McSherry
2025 record: 0-10
Players to watch: Patrycja Klich, Mikayla Bradle, WR Amberli Reyes, Sreynich Keo, Larissa Diaz, WR Leah Caguana, QB Jaylene Panchon, Mia Nieto
Outlook: The Eagles will look to make strides in the season ahead after a winless campaign last year. Panchon and Nieto are newcomers who will be expected to contribute immediately. Panchon will lead the offense as the quarterback.
Quote: “Leyden is a second year program that has a handful of returning players from last year. We had a good offseason with many of them making a commitment to getting better,” McSherry said.
Libertyville
Coach: Tiffany Rafiner
2025 record: 14-4, won regional final against Barrington
Players to watch: Ava Crivello, Lily Causemaker, Leah Toll, Quinn Krueger, Caylee Cobo, Maddie Forrest, RUSH Mac Krueger, RUSH Emme Ryan, Finley Randall, Jules Figurelli, Mia Kovach, Alex Biggerstaff, Olivia Eddy
Outlook: The Wildcats will look to build upon a regional championship run from 2025. They had to persevere after losing three quarterbacks in the final two weeks of the season. Crivello, Causemaker, Toll and Quinn Krueger will set the pace on offense, with Randall and Figurelli joining as newcomers.
Quote: “I would describe this year's team as energetic and a force to be reckoned with. We have a mix of new and returning athletes on our team this year who are beaming with excitement to play,” Rafiner said.
Maine South

Outlook: The reigning state champion and fifth rated team in the USA Today Preseason Top 25, the Hawks are loaded with talent. Majka is a preseason first team All-American, while De La Cruz is on the second team. De La Cruz has a flag football offer from the University Nebraska-Lincoln. Velan, Strotman, and Murrary will look to make their mark as newcomers.

Mundelein
Coach: Julie Ellingsen
2025 record: 5-11
Players to watch: Alexis Gilbert, Anna Knop, Caity Perez, Aubrey Glogovsky, QB Bella Hofer, AJ Russell, Nahla Hill, Anabell Michalski, Alissa Denisov, Kyla Lesniak, Aaliyah Jones
Outlook: Entering its second year as a program, coach Ellingsen is excited about the continued growth and leadership her squad is developing. Gilbert, Knop, and Michalski all took massive strides forward this offseason and their coach is expecting each of them to make a two-way impact this fall. The trio will bring elusiveness to the field every time they touch the ball.
Quote: “This program is growing, and we saw that firsthand with a strong freshman turnout at tryouts this year,” Ellingsen said. “These girls lead with integrity, they play with courage, and they're setting an example for young women in our school and our community.”
Naperville Central
Coach: Caroline Schwartz
2025 record: 16-4, beat Glenbard West 25-0 to claim a regional championship
Players to watch: C/LB Maya Stohner, WR/CB Tegan Marshall, WR/S Grace Kozielski, WR/CB Neelah Key
Outlook: QB Lyla Hope graduated after throwing for 4,960 yards and 62 touchdowns a year ago. Nicole Smith and all-state honoree Malia Shen depart as well; however, coach Caroline Schwartz is confident that Stohner, Marshall, Kozielski, and Key can help fill in the gaps for a team that won a regional title over a talented Glenbard West group last fall. Stohner is a dual threat at center and provides a steady presence at linebacker. Marshall had 17 interceptions in 2025.
Quote: “Kozielski is set for a breakout year; she is a true ball hawk on both sides of the ball with high football IQ and great instincts,” Schwartz said. “Key is a top newcomer who brings athletic skill and versatility to our receiver room and defensive backfield.”
Naperville North

Outlook: The Huskies added several talented newcomers and underclassmen to the program this season, and they are excited to see how it develops and contributes this season. With a young and enthusiastic group, coach Dena Shumate expects several new players to make an impact as the season progresses.
Quote: “We have 10 returning starters along with a strong group of new players, so we are excited to build on the success and growth of last season,” Shumate said. “This is a fun, energetic group of female athletes.”
Rolling Meadows
Coach: Todd Schaap
2025 record: 12-7
Players to watch: Cara Cruz, Caylee Del Boccio, Anna Andriano, Meghan Riggi, Patrycja Lewicki, Katherine Andriano, Iris Jordan
Outlook: Six of the Mustangs’ seven losses last year came against teams ranked in the top 20 in the state. They faced high-level competition throughout the season and proved that they could compete with some of the best teams in Illinois.
Quote: “Our returning players helped lead us to 12 victories while competing against one of the most challenging schedules around,” Schaap said. “Their playmaking, versatility, leadership and willingness to compete against elite opponents helped establish the foundation for this season.”
St. Charles East
Coach: Zachary Hendry
2025 record: 7-10, claimed first round playoff win over Addison Trail 35-12
Players to watch: QB Ari Bigda, C Brynn Maple, RB Erini Vardalos, LB Sophia Rivas, RUSH Mya Pallares, LB/RB Erini Vardalos, Mia Smith, Amelia Krillies, Molly Snyder
Outlook: Bigda, Maple, and Vardalos were all-DuKane picks in 2025. The Saints competed at the varsity level last season with just 13 players, requiring several two-way efforts. Despite the lack of depth, they were competitive in many of their games and flashed improvements all season long.
Quote: “This year’s team is hungry, competitive, and growing,” Hendry said. “We are continuing to build our program, develop our athletes, and create a strong team culture.”
St. Charles North
Coach: Michael Taormina
2025 record: 19-3, DuKane champions, lost to Oswego East in regional finals
Players to watch: WR/DB Alexzandria Richardson, QB Kaelie Tomalak, RB/WR Adeline Shook, DEF Brianna Leycock, DEF Eva Sudar, DEF Aubrey Underkofler, DEF Jillian Salter, Adeline Hromadka and Skylar Cattell
Outlook: Richardson anchors the offense, alongside Tomalak and Shook. This year’s team has an exciting combination of returning experience and talented underclassmen. The North Stars will have several younger players who have shown the athleticism, competitiveness and football IQ to make an immediate impact.
Quote: “We know the expectations are different this year,” Taormina said. “We’re no longer the new program that people are overlooking. Our challenge is to continue improving, stay hungry and build on what we accomplished last season. The goal isn’t simply to repeat last year’s success.”
Stevenson
Coach: Sarah Gutierrez
2025 record: 13-3, North Suburban conference champions
Players to watch: QB Evie Sryegellas, WR/QB AC Contreras, WR Kelsey Krull, RUSH Val Shamuel, DB Natalie Owens
Outlook: The Patriots won the North Suburban outright in 2025. Coach Sarah Gutierrez enjoyed the ride and was happy about the culture she was able to establish within the program.
Quote: “Our QB Evie Sryegellas is returning along with wide receiver and QB AC Contreras,” Gutierrez said. “Both will be our first four-year varsity players in the program. We are really stoked to see what they do. Kelsey Krull has a big year ahead as our top wide receiver as well.”
Warren

Outlook: Last season was very much a year of development for the Blue Devils program. Leadership was intentional about investing in young players and giving them meaningful varsity experience. They are hoping the experience will begin paying off this season.
Quote: “We had a productive summer, and we're starting to see the benefits of the experience many of our younger players gained last season,” Lange said. “Four of our current sophomores started for us as freshmen, and several of our players also have significant varsity experience in other sports.”
West Aurora
Coach: Jordyn McFarlane
2025 record: 21-3, 9-0 Upstate Eight
Players to watch: QB Sarahi Carlos, WR Gracie Del Toro, RB Aiyanah Sylvester, RUSH Gisselle Torres and CB Aliyah Sylvester
Outlook: Quarterback Sarahi Carlos earned first team all-state honors last season. The Blackhawks won the Upstate Eight and a regional finals before dropping the sectional finals to juggernaut Willowbrook. Their top two returning defenders are lead rusher Gisselle Torres and cornerback Aliyah Sylvester. These two have also been three-year starters and will bring a lot of experience to a new, young defensive core.
Quote: “We're really excited about all of our newcomers,” McFarlane said. “We think they can all come in and contribute to the continued success of our program.”
Wheaton North
Coach: Will Kadera
2025 record: 15-3, second in DuKane
Players to watch: Brea Moore, Moriah Herr, Maya Merrifield, Addy Sutton, Emily Bruzdzinski, Delaney Surber, Becca Farris, Jillian Malcolm, and Claire Malcolm
Outlook: The Falcons made it to the regional finals, where they lost to West Aurora, 20-19. Linebacker Bella Carmona, defenders Abby Wood and Karolina Mostowska, and wide receiver Maddie Novak will join as newcomers.
Quote: “We were 15-3 last year. All of the wins were big,” Kadera said. “Wins are not always easy to come by so we celebrate them all.”
Wheaton Warrenville South
Coach: Kevin Farley
2025 record: 7-14
Players to watch: WR Lola Naples, WR McKaileigh Hughes, QB Mya Williams, DEF Mackenzie Conley, DEF AJ Zielinski, DEF Addison Jensen
Outlook: Offensively, Naples led the team in receiving yards (812), receptions (78), and was tied with the most receiving touchdowns (6). She also made all-conference. Hughes led the team in rushing yards (135) and rushing touchdowns (3). Although she was a wide receiver she was able to help in the run game quite a bit. Williams started off as the JV quarterback, but earned her way to starting on the varsity level, throwing for 16 touchdowns and 1,991 yards in 15 games played.
Quote: “I would describe this year's team as new and improving,” Farley said. “The new part is because we graduated 17 seniors. The improving aspect comes from the fact that everyone is learning the game more and more everyday and although we might not have mastered it we are still getting significantly better.”
Willowbrook
Coach: Rachel Karos
2025 record: 23-1, third place in state

Outlook: One of the most accomplished groups in the state. The Warriors will have a great mix of experienced veterans and talented young players as they keep getting better and build chemistry. Adams is the reigning defensive player of the year in the West Suburban Gold. Several all-state talents return as well. They are ranked 14th nationally by USA Today.

York

Outlook: Last season was the first year of York flag football. Two exciting newcomers that are expected to contribute this season are freshman Margot Becker and sophomore Eva Soliz. Both have shown a lot of potential.
Quote: “This group is ready to compete and eager to get the season started,” Fischer said. “There is a lot of energy around the program right now, and the girls are excited about the opportunity in front of them.”
