MWRD offering discounted rain barrels to Cook County residents
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is offering rain barrels to Cook County residents at a discounted cost.
The barrels capture rainwater from roofs for later use. They also can help prevent basement backups, street flooding and sewer overflows by keeping water out of the sewer system, according to the MWRD.
Water from the barrels can be used to irrigate lawns and gardens, or for cleaning around the house.
The barrels are made from durable high-density polyethylene, can hold up to 55 gallons of water, and come in four colors: black, blue, terra cotta and gray. Delivery is free and instructions are included.
Cook County residents may purchase up to two rain barrels for $22.30 each, which includes tax. Barrels are $11.15 each for residents age 65 and older.
