Man detained on gun charges after Villa Park car chase
A Chicago man is being detained pretrial in the DuPage County jail on charges he violated gun laws and led police on a high-speed chase in Villa Park.
Don Williams Jr., 20, of the 1100 block of South Hamilton Avenue, is charged with one count each of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated fleeing and eluding. All are felonies, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
Authorities say that around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, Villa Park police tried to stop a vehicle they believe was involved in another felony crime. The vehicle pulled over, but when the officer got out of his vehicle, it drove off, at speeds exceeding 107 mph at Roosevelt Road and York Street. Authorities say Williams was the driver.
Oak Brook police deflated two of the vehicle’s tires on eastbound I-290. The vehicle then crashed into a guard rail. Williams and four other people got out and ran off, authorities said.
Police say they found a loaded Glock handgun, with a 28-round extended magazine, on the driver’s seat. They say they also found an extended magazine in the back seat.
According to a prosecutor’s petition to detain Williams, he has convictions on weapons offenses in Kane and DeKalb counties.
Williams’ next court date is Sept. 14.
