Police: Naperville man threatened workers with machete

A Naperville man faces charges alleging he threatened two men with a machete outside his apartment building earlier this week.

Daniel O’Neill, 35, is charged with felony criminal damage to government-supported property and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct, Naperville police said.

According to police, officers were called to a disturbance on the 300 block of North Charles Avenue at 2:03 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said officers were told O’Neill had advanced on two building workers while armed with a machete. The workers ran into the building and took shelter in a maintenance room, according to police. O’Neill ran after them and hit the door to the room with the machete, authorities allege.

Police said O’Neill later refused to come out for several hours after officers arrived. When police flew a drone into his apartment, O’Neill disabled it and threw it out a fifth-floor window, authorities allege.

O’Neill eventually was arrested. Nobody was injured, police said.

DuPage County prosecutors asked that O’Neill be detained while awaiting trial, but a judge ruled he is not accused of a detainable offense. The judge ordered O’Neill to undergo a psychological evaluation, according to court records.

The drone, which was about the size of a person’s palm, was worth $500, according to the prosecutor’s petition for detention.
