Potentially severe thunderstorms to hit area this week

Another round of thunderstorms is expected to hit Chicago after severe weather downed trees and brought possible tornadoes to the area Sunday night.

The upcoming storms are expected to last from Monday through Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, some are likely to be severe and may result in flash flooding.

Sunday saw two rounds of severe thunderstorms and around 1.34 inches of rainfall. The severe weather was fueled by warm, humid air, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Rafal Ogorek.

Several potential tornadoes were reported last night in Lee and LaSalle counties, Ogorek said. National Weather Service crews are surveying the damage.

This week, Ogorek said, “it’s going to be more of the same.” Thunderstorms may bring damaging winds, hail or tornadoes.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are cloudy and humid at 77 degrees, with the same at Midway Airport.
