Public hearing scheduled on proposed data center moratorium in Lake County

The Lake County Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, to gather public input on a proposed temporary moratorium on data centers in unincorporated areas.

The hearing will be held at the Central Permit Facility, 500 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville. It will focus specifically on the proposed 8-month moratorium. The county only has the authority to impose a moratorium in the unincorporated areas.

If adopted, a temporary moratorium would give the county time to evaluate data centers as an emerging land use, assess potential infrastructure, environmental and other impacts, and identify best practices that could assist in drafting future regulations and restrictions.

Those unable to attend can submit comments online for consideration by 5 p.m. Aug. 14.
